A thread for scientific nerdiness

The time of the dinosaur’s dominance, from the end of the Triassic to the final catastrophic meteor strike, was not the Age of Reptiles. It was the Age of Big Weird Feathered Things. It’s just the mainstream world that is lagging behind.
They Had Feathers: Is the World Ready to See Dinosaurs as They Really Were?

My excuse for playing in the mud as a grownup is Archeology, not Paleontology, so whilst this isn’t exactly news to me / knew general thought was moving towards this construct ... I’m still more mainstream than in the know :bag: So I thought it was cool :sneaky:

Rather than having this reaction

In last summer’s Jurassic World movie, a pack of scaly velociraptors chased a man on a motorcycle.

There are two possible reactions to this scene. One, if you are among the blockbuster’s wider audience: Wow! Those dinosaurs look like they’re alive! Or two, if you are a paleontologist or a dinosaur-obsessed kid: Wait a minute. Those are too big to be velociraptors. And why are they covered with scales?

And I object. THREE possible reactions.

I wanna service velociraptor!!!

Joking/not joking.

So I'm up lying in my hospital bed, watching some tv and an ad for a brand of high fibre cereal that helps with the growth of "bifidobacterium" and "lactobacillus" comes on.

NO.
Noooooooooo.
No.
No.
NOOOOO.

They are names of genera.
They get a capital letter.

It's like fingernails down the chalkboard of my soul.

Found a cheery little fact today that made me laugh whilst running through an oceanography text book...there is a sea cucumber now named after trump due to its toupe like spines and orange body colour.
It also is a deposit feeder so relies on fish poop for sustenance (savage marine biologists)
