A thread for scientific nerdiness

We're currently experiencing a measles outbreak.
This is bullshit.
It's 2019.
This should NOT be happening.

Anti-vac people (not targeting anyone on this forum; this is a general vent at anti-vaccers in NZ and world wide): open your eyes.

Get off your selfish, idiotic high horses and stop undoing the hard work of science and putting the lives of those who CAN'T have the vaccine (such as folks who've received organ transplants and are immunosuppressed) at risk.

Rah.

Vaxing a measle outbreak in Latin America, hiking tens of thousands of vaccines to isolated clinics across the mountains because we couldn’t fly them in (surface to air missiles), getting to villages too late & being part of the burial party, being an armed guard to cargo so precious people would -and often tried- to kill for it, people travelling hundreds of miles on foot to try and meet our route to save their kids... is part of my trauma history. I get a bit... irrational is not the right word. Because anyone who has actually SEEN what measles -and other preventable f*cking illnesses- does instead of thinking that herd immunity will save them (if they even realize that’s why we are as healthy as we are :banghead: ) gets het up about this kind of completely preventable bullshit, as well as anyone with half a brain.

It makes me want to slap “I drive drunk” stickers on their cars.

@Friday wins the day again.

I reckon.
The most transmissible virus known to man.
It hangs around in the air after an infected person coughs, for f*cks sake.

And now we're prioritising our vaccines for those who haven't had any. :wtf:
I want to send all our anti-vaxxers to an isolated camp site, to teach them that they can't just catch a free ride on the herd immunity.

They can use whatever voodoo they think is going to save them and report back on how effective it is.
Inclusive of my abuser... f*ckhead

Hah, same with mine, @bellbird. Though honestly I hope she’s changed her mind, because she was avoiding the tetnus shot and working in a dog kennel. Painful way to end up that I honestly hope she avoided. At least I warned her.

What's worse is that scientists have figured out that getting measles depresses the immune system for years, so if you don't die if the measles you may very well die of something else fairly soon. It's why the measles vaccine appeared to work on several childhood illnesses, not just measles.

At least I warned her.
Yep, the best you can do.

Oh wow, interesting. I didn't know that.
