Yes, it just plain sucks. Working nonresident aliens pay HIGHER taxes than Americans (in their income bracket) as per tax laws as well as into social security like every American, while yet again not being eligible to actually benefit from any of it. It's a major slap in the face.

------

Also.... a one-time umbrella payment of $1,200 doesn't get you anywhere if you live in an high-cost area. It's not even enough to pay two weeks of rent in many places.

While it looks nice on paper... it's really just to distract from all the bailout money that's going to big cooperations. And I stop there as to not turn it political.

Ya it would pay for two weeks of rent for me. I live in a very expensive area. I am lucky as I just got my green card. And mostly lucky as my job is not in the line. but am worried about a lot of other people.

And yes it doesn’t make sense that if you’re homeless or too poor, it’s like too bad. They get nothing.
I think you might be right @siniang even though my coworkers seem so sure about it. Ugh they are def gonna be disappointed when they find out. I am sorry if I spread misinformation. Either way I would encourage everyone to just double check based on their status etc to make sure and sometimes some loopholes exist.

I went to the big box store a couple towns over. Once I got away from the beach the stay at home order became obvious against right away very quiet.

The store was quiet and understocked. Maybe 20% down in stock and 1/3 less shoppers I guess. There were some masks but very few. There was a guy at the door wiping the carriage and a hand washing station, very nice. There were some tape on the floors guiding people not to stand close together but it wasn't crowded,.

Coming back the road was very quiet till I got home and the beach was still busy.

My parents are actually surprising me.

They started off very typically & loudly against people who don’t pay taxes getting emergency aid/stimulus money... and then they realized that neither my sister, or my son & I, or Auntie qualify for it. For very different reasons. My sister is in her doctoral program, and working 60+ hours a week... but it’s a combo of part time paid work, unpaid supervised internship hours, and financial aid package where the money she would earn from the classes she’s teaching is taken directly off of her tuition. (My life, meanwhile is FUBAR). My aunt has been battling cancer for the past 2 years.

So the rest of the family, which is doing quite well (savings, and assets, etc), are all getting checks... but the college student, single mom, and cancer patient? Who are all just barely eeking by? Or were, before, but are f*cked now? Arent. And my parents are suddenly flabbergasted. They “need” this money, but the people they love / are intimately acquainted with their circumstances, who need it even more? Aren’t. You can kind of see their heads imploding as their world view shifts.

If anything pushes this country over the brink into joining the rest of the 1st world it MIGHT just be this illness... if the rest of the DOWN-with-pinko-commie-bastards (except for public school & social security benefits ;)) generation... are anything like my parents, and coming to understand -for my parents literally for the very first time- that the people who qualify for social programs? Aren’t the con artists & scum of the earth the news likes to play up as representative... but the people they know & love best, in a hard spot.

@Mach123 my mother just cancelled her appointment with her long standing hairdresser. I think she's been cutting my mother's hair for thirty or more years. Mum who actually has quite short hair was bemoaning the fact that she'd have to wear it in a bun?? lol

I offered to cut it for her. She asked me if I knew how to cut hair. I told the truth and said I've got no idea how to do it but why let that get in the way of a fun time?? :hilarious: She's decided to grow it long lol..

I apologise for being angry in this thread. Work has been really hard. My ward has been selected for the under 65s with pre existing conditions who are positive for the virus (dnar for them all). It's been really hard to tell families that their 45 year old parent is dying n no they're not allowed to visit and say bye. It's making me really, really angry at everyone that has potential symptoms n is still going outside. Cos work is breaking whatever soul I even have left.

@Chris-duck I know you're finding this role that you've been assigned extremely difficult. There is nothing that can make it easier and I'm so sorry.

Remember that of all the people that those relatives might have encountered, they got you & you are creating the one and only enduring memory they will have of their loved ones last days. That to me, is such an honour but also such a burden. I stand with you too.

Yeah I think it's cos palliative care is something I'm relatively good at. But telling family they can't visit is hard. Cos I know I'd kick off if I couldn't be with a loved one when they're palliative. N I know it's just bad timing for the palliative patient. Any other illness, any other time would be okay. It seems so unfair.

We are doing everything we can obviously for all our patients n spending extra time since family can't. But it's so obvious that it's not the same.
