News Worldwide impact of the novel coronavirus (covid-19)

At the end of Feb, what did you think things would look like a month later? I doubt any of us would have guessed exactly right, even those of us who knew things were going to get wild.
Nerd ms spock here (as if the name doesn't say that in flashing lights) In February we started stockpiling enough food and resources for 3 months. We got all our shopping in a couple of weeks before the paniked shopping - and cringes - the extra transmission happening in those situation made my blood run cold. It's the privilege of being part of Scientific & Technological groups. Then we went to approximately 3 - 6 months in early March, well watching 4 corners kind of really brought it home.

Now we are putting in vegetable gardens because (barring a vaccine coming in quickly) it's 6-12 months. This was talking to a doctor friend, a bunch of scientists friends I have known for years, my friend that who studied microbiology and also all the reading & then watching Australians crowding in groups to go to special elderly shopping sessions - if one person had it then they all do - the long Centrelink lines with no social distancing - it's a goner. Our Prime Minister kept having press briefings saying that there was monitoring and everyone who came back from overseas said - nope nada. Last Sunday no one was there they just walked through and a couple of times during last week. Even commerical TV stations went and filmed no set up in place.

Some of my friend's relatives came back on the Ruby Princess Cruise and finally I heard that actually people went in to quarantine. So that's three months of no action, despite everything that was on the World Health Organisation has on it's website, the heartbreaking pleas to take action from the Italians not to make their mistakes, and so forth. If information that recently came to hand about a letter written to our Prime Minister in November is actually true then that's 5 months of no action but I need verification before I discuss that.

Then there's the set up and preparation from the private schools and businesses. Private schools were holding meetings in January to get the technology set up for at home social distancing education even before "social distancing" was a term in common parlance. In February private schools were doing tests of education with teachers via a range of devices, with students at home. They were setting in for the long haul. Same with some businesses - I thought hmmmmmmmmmmmm. If you weren't in Scientific, Technological, Medical or Private School or a small section of the business section, and you only heard the PM, you wouldn't have any idea was going on. Tomorrow it will be two weeks since the PM stopped telling people it was okay to go to the footy, restaurants & out with friends. Folks that only heard that message have a huge vulnerability. Education will determine survival and wealth will determine survival.

I tried to warn folks and it was a fruitless and pointless endeavour that left me feeling disillusioned and friendless in some circles. However other friends sent articles. let me know what our doctor friend who is going nuts because immediate quarantine and testing would have prevented all of this, and I though it's for the long haul. Other folks letting me know they were in shut down and I said yeah since February in lockdown. And they were impressed and one said how do you stand it and I think you are a doctor's partner who gives advice on some things - so she's not looking forward to so much time with her partner. He's brilliant and writes novels and they are renovating their house so I hope that keeps them busy. I have reached out to some folks I presume would be locking down. But mostly other than the stress of not infecting B and crunching the numbers - I thought it would be 20 million - 600 million fatalities but no it's 25 million - 700 million, I got irrationally angry at the person who explained it to me online. It's just so many people. And we do have the technologies with Pandemic Offices and so for around the world. Even a drunken half competent Prime Minister who just read out WHO press releases could have at least impressed on folks how important socially distancing is rather than back flipping and give double, triple etc messages. That could have saved a lot of lives.

I have a friend that did the Ebola modeling on the range of transmission and he was right on the money. And I remember listening to them working it out, and I haven't talked to him because I really don't want to know but then I do.

This is why all the experts say, “This is a rapidly developing situation.”
And I am mostly not in PTSD, I am just in stunned mullet mode. Wishing I could do more for folks.

Give it a day and it will change. The end of April isn’t going to look like what we expect. The numbers of dead peaking in two weeks may change things in a myriad of ways.
I think you, sadly, are right, and that is what worries me.

China's divorce rate went up from Covid-19. I suspect we will follow suite.
Domestic violence because of being in close quarters in quarantine has gone through the roof. In one place googling domestic violence escapes has gone up 70%. Howard so many programme, some of them were successful. He cut a lot of trauma sensitive stuff - the violent family moved in to a house and had workers there 24/7 to assist in managing the dynamics. I know a kid whose family did it and it changed their lives. Abbot cut $300 million dollars from DV funding. It's so tough on the young boys, my brother is a mess because he's terrified he will become like our Father/SpermDonor. Look I am scared of becoming like my Father - you know I check myself sometimes - I can't imagine how hard it is for him. How do you create a male identity when that extreme explosive ongoing violence which had no rhyme nor reason.

Passing the time by sewing up face masks and delivering them to people who I know need them.

What a weird world it's become.

?????You are a magnificent person!

Thanks so much for doing that!

You are literally saving folks lives and by proxy you are saving each and every person's life that they save. Wow! That's just fantastic!

We have to do the Math on how many folks you are saving!

This is how we will get through. We will get through with guts, kindness, action, humour and amazing contributions like yours!

???????

think the US constitution (free this, free that) is biting the US people in the arse right now. This is a time people should not be so free to do what they want, and instead be within a entire imposed lockdown, no more than 2 people in any group, type situation.
But wait! That’s not ALL! For a mere (mumble) installments of $19.99? You can have your freedom AND a slice of The American Dream!!! :woot: Remember! Use your credit card, folks! This deal won’t last! Order now and get 2, Count them, thats 2!, free rolls of toilet paper! Bleached for your protection!

I guess unless the higher up's don't mind losing a whole bunch of the population.
Our govt. cares about protecting businesses, not people. Corporations matter. Employees People don’t.

Don’t get me wrong, individuals still care about other people. And some of those individuals are in government. But IMO our govt. itself doesn’t give a rats ass about its citizens, and hasn’t for IDFK how long. It cares about 2 things; getting re-elected, & its own bottom line.

Land of the free and home of the brave ...isn’t even a song they teach school children, anymore. Nor does “...with liberty and justice for all.” ring out every morning by millions of little voices, who might actually grow up to fight for those things. But they do teach them how to invest in the stock market? And how to bolster your credit score? So I suppose it all washes out, in the end. Allegiance to the Almighty Dollar! instead of to our nation and each other. Show. Me. The. Motherf*cking. Money. :bored:

@joeylittle, thanks for the article. I didn't realize we had so many officers with the virus.

My theory on our high numbers is 1. Many Michiganders travel to the warmer climates from November through April. Cruises. Airlines. Overseas travel... They may have brought it back with them. (A group of uni students were in Spain. Some passed it to their families.) 2. When it finally started hitting the news (it was already too late) people flocked to the stores, stood in line for hours and probably passed it to others. 3. We didn't close businesses until last Monday the 23rd. and it was already in our factories and offices. 4. I believe our first loss was in December. That's three months of people basically unaware of what was going on. 5.People are ignorant.

We recently had a death in our family (Not related to the virus) and we're unable to have a funeral for her. The funeral home is going to live stream the service in the morning and they're doing a very small group at the cemetery, 8- 10 people. This is a hard thing to accept. Funerals are very important to my family (we go big!) so we have to have it at a later time. We all just want to be together and we can't. It's crushing.

J and I went for a drive up the coast today. We stopped at a couple of roadside parks. There were very few cars on the road. Some families getting fresh air. The few people we ran into (socially distanced) were very friendly, people waving, making small talk. People are being kinder and it's sad that it takes something like this to make people realize life is precious and human contact is important.

Yea @anthony, Americans don't like their Bill of Rights and Constitution infringed upon. We all know what can happen to a nation when their civil rights are taken away. Every time the press or the government mentions Martial Law they sell another 100,000 guns. The Media has the average Joe afraid of their government and other boogeymen. We'll be fine unless they call for Martial Law because people will start doing stupid sh#t. (Remember the O.J. trial or the Rodney King case?) Hopefully we're able to keep the National Guard in place for the distribution of resources and helping with medical care because I'm afraid of what could happen if they are put in place to enforce the law.

✌& ?!!

@Friday , while our POTUS and my Govenor were having their Twitter war our citizens came together and did what our government couldn't/wouldn't do.

GM and Ford stepped up and started production of medical supplies. Breweries started making hand sanitizer. Dentists and other physicians started donating their supplies to hospitals. I know alot of people making masks and donating them. Restaurants are giving free meals to first responders, health care workers and truck drivers. And on and on...

It's amazing what we can do without our government's help. Imagine what we could accomplish if we had their support and they actually cared about their citizens more than the almighty dollar. Can you imagine?
