maybe able to reopen in middle America where the numbers are small or non-existant.
I live in middle America. JMO here, but based on what we're hearing from the state. The reason there are fewer cases here is partly because there are fewer PEOPLE here and partly because we're at an earlier point in the curve. We also have less resources here so I hope our governor goes on doing his job (looking out for us) and ignores all the spin.

As of yesterday, I think we has just under 500 cases in the state. 9 dead, nearly all from nursing home type settings.

word is that the latest financial support for workers will be extended to Kiwis living and working in Australia

^Really?? Cos I thought the normal social security rules would apply... usually the first one being "Are you an Australian citizen?"

Not wanting to disagree Sideways cos I like Hamish and Andy too. Just thought the bean counters would be applying some basic rules across the board regarding this & other packages the government is handing out today.

But hey if those that gave you the word are correct then well done NZ citizens.

Thanks for the update! Hope ya'll are keeping safe!

In the last White House update, the doctor in the cornonvirus task force had stated that middle America might be able to open some businesses and schools. So wasnt sure.

Hope the governors are giving good info and keeping their states safe!

Interestingly enough Taiwan took charge of making the masks and gave everyone two masks and they wore them. They paid folks to stay home in quarantine as well. Take a look at the PPEs that the cleaners have on. Our hospitals need those #PPEs. Going to school means your temperature is taken. All children wear masks and note the blue dividers that stops kids transmitting #Covid19 whilst eating.

Taiwan did a great job! As I said before.. Temps are taken here now ( a little late) but just the same.( Doctors offices, anyway)

Here in Australia, we have a reasonably consistent national approach. Social distancing limits indoor and outdoor gatherings to 2 people, period. Anyone over 70 has been advised to self isolate. There's a 6 month moratorium on evictions. There's a range of social security supports for individuals who have lost their job, as well as those who may be able to hang on.

Everyone entering the country (citizens and permanent residents) are being quarantined in hotels, with food, for 2 weeks at no cost.

Supermarkets are working together to make their stores available for the elderly and disabled, and seperate times for health and emergency workers. Various distilleries are producing hand sanitizer and the defence force is chipping in to help the production lines in our one factory producing face masks.

Our big 4 banks have agreed on a consistent approach to supporting small businesses.

The military are helping out, in pretty much every measure, and then some.

Private companies that are usually competitors - working together. Opposing political parties, at different levels of government, working together.

There are people still doing the wrong thing. Not taking it seriously. We're not getting everything right. We weren't well prepared. We don't have anything like enough PPE or hospital beds (and staff to manage them). But there's a hell of a lot to be proud of.

We'll get through this thing. It will leave devastation in its wake. But Australians are, for the most part, working together as best they can.

Sounds like Austrialia has their shit together! Wish the US can do this!

Yep, and as far as I know, the initial rounds of relief, and the Centrelink benefits for people who lost their job already aren't available to New Zealanders, per the usual Centrelink rules.

But Adern has been pressuring Morrison about the issue for a while now, and SBS is reporting that the latest payment, which is the $1500 fortnightly subsidy (seperate to the Centrelink support payments), will apply to NZers.

We just got a stay at home issue ordered today. Got a text on our phones too, really weird. With the blaring alarm and all. My business falls under what's considered essential, but I don't have letters or paperwork because my business is just me so I don't really know what to do. I only have one client left, so no income if I don't go. (USA, eastern seaboard) I'm worried about being stopped by police or something. How do I show them I'm essential?
