News Worldwide impact of the novel coronavirus (covid-19)

Yeah, but it's entirely uninforceable
Canada’s doing a pretty good job of enforcing social distancing laws & mandates during the emergency.

A few of the thousand dollar (and up!) tickets are being quashed, but most are... pay attention, or pay up.

More ways to enforce a law than arrest. Sometimes a big ass fine attached to a ticket is far more effective. Cop doesn’t even have to get within 6 feet of you to scan your license and zap a ticket, or even mail a ticket to the registered vehicles address, no stop required. If you want to contest, there’s the video evidence on their cruiser or vest. Prove you live with the person you’re less than 3 feet from, or pay up.

People don’t seem to value their lives as much as their wallets. IDFK about that logic, but it seems to be widely held. They won’t do something to save their own life, that they will do to save a thousand bucks. Shrug. People.

They say even a bandana will work.
As well as any home sewn surgical mask.

I WANNA STETSON!

(Stetsons are cool.)

Bandanas / neckerchiefs are super easy to wear tied around your neck, and just pull up over your nose Wild West style. Of course, pocket kerchiefs only require the extra step of tying it on. (Pocket squares are not big enough, they were for fashion not practical use, unless you considered it practical not to be giving away your pocket kerchief to people, because it was too small to use for anything other than decoration). Of course, that means having a profusion of handkerchiefs / bandanas to be washing... Like @Ronin said, they’re stupid easy to make... but I suspect long failing niche businesses are going to have a sudden revival. ;)

* I fibbed, up above. What I reeeeeeeally want (if I were buying a hat, to go with my bandana or -you know- to keep the weather off) is an Akubra. I beat the hell outta my hats, and Akubras stand up to all kinds of mistreatment, in all kinds of weather. I stole one off someone in the 90s once, and never looked back. Horses, sailing, desert, mountain, salt, sand, snow, rain, nothing better. Wicked well made, and damn pretty too!

I *have* a stetson. From way back. That I absolutely despise. Fugly ugly f*ckthing.

Happy to donate, to my surprise it hasn't been eaten by moles as intended, yet.

*Yes I can also be completely off topic, ducking from modsmack soonest. Just needed to get rid of things. ;) *

ETA And yeah. Here issues fines as well. Works even at moronic drunks rather well, so far.

It's just slow going and not an uniform nation wide thing yet, I've noticed.

There, I don't needa hide from modsmack.

A google search will bring many non-medical mask and even face shield DIY instructions using materials around the home.

The US just turned around a plane with N95 masks bound for Germany. This is being argued hotly. Good idea? Bad idea?

About face masks... My Dad did a little experiment to find the best cloth to make face masks. He googled how to make them and to find out which kind of material would work the best. They said to use a flashlight to shine through the material to see if it was thick enough. He tested t shirts, sweaters, sweatshirts etc. etc. What he found was that the thicker part of a pillow case, the double layerd area was the best material to work with. Gotta love my Dad and his ocd. ❤?

In construction in the 80's when working around fiberglass I was known to lift my t shirt up over my face, leaving the neck around my neck and just wrapping the body and sleeves around my head and tucking here or there for a quick way to keep from breathing the dust. I wouldn't do that now, I am an old guy and no one wants to see that much lilly white old guy skin, enough to make a construction worker cringe I am sure. But if the t shirt was an ADDITION to my regular attire, I am sure it would work as well today at keeping the big chunks out. I am going to try it, I have a lot of cool t shirts.

There is a certain wild west feeling when going out and about with a mask on your face that takes me back to playing cowboys and indians when I was a kid. all you had to do was wear a mask and everyone knew you were the bad guy.

I wonder how many businesses are going to reopen with signs on their doors asking people to please lower their masks before entering. I doubt that any bank will allow anyone in the lobby with a mask, remove your hat and take off your sunglasses has been the rule forever here in the US. If they don't have a drive up window, the days of face to face banking may be over for a lot of branches.

Now in the US, the states are fighting amoungst themselves. 3 million masks ordered by Massachusetts were seized at Port of NY in March

I think you will see far more opening requiring masks and fever checks. They are already doing it for workers. COVID-19: Walmart and Sam's Club will start checking workers for fever and Coronavirus changing policies: fever checks, masks, fewer hours and customers. Some are considering banning children.

So maybe instead of No masks, omg.

I didn't interpret any of the posts and the one you quoted as being panicky about masks.

Home made masks to catch droplets for people who Refuse to follow the the rules are better than nothing.

Yes, better than nothing.

This. If you wear it and cough into it, you need to wash it. Shouldn't be wearing it over and over again. And I personally don't have a working washing machine (I can do by hand, but then I also don't have an abundance of stuff to use).

Amazon has masks in stock for not much.

I just got up, so missed this news. WTH? I don't know exactly what the situation is, but one of the things I find frustrating (not saying it's anybody's fault, just confusing) is that this morning they say one thing (like, we are going to help other countries with supplies) and in the afternoon they say they are reversing that. I know that the situation is rapidly evolving, but with something like supplies, going back on a promise to help could have dire consequences.

I think we should, generally, help other countries, but in this case if we don't have enough of our own supplies, we need to keep what we do have here.

What he found was that the thicker part of a pillow case, the double layerd area was the best material to work with.

Your dad is awesome!

:bag: I never thought I’d say this....

...GO PATRIOTS!!!

In related news? It seems a no brainer to stop exporting masks (or other critical supplies) when you’re still in short supply / can’t even get the supplies you need to your own healthcare workers & first responders. There’s a ridiculous amount of precedent for this, during natural disasters and wars, just on a smaller scale. You don’t outfit everyone before you airlift supplies to allies and neighbors, but you get your first tier/ass covered, then do it, in conjunction with covering your secondary and tertiary needs at home. As do they. It’s a system that works. At every level. It saves the most lives, and maintains/preserves international relationships, which saves more lives. No idea why people seem to want to toss a tried and true system out the window.

But it’s going to cause one helluva kerfluffal
