News Worldwide impact of the novel coronavirus (covid-19)

The Lancet has reviewed all available studies regarding the worthiness of wearing masks and now believes that despite the issue of them possibly not being worn properly, not being changed enough and all of the other problems with masks that reduce their effectiveness, they may still be beneficial in terms of reducing the spread of the virus.

Now if only the part of the population that refuses to wear a mask believed that.

I spoke to another one of my neighbors who doesn't believe in the virus. I kept stepping back as he moved forward, since I was in my backyard and neither of us were wearing masks. He thinks I'm a prepper since I have chickens and grow a lot of my own food, but this isn't the case. I'm a homesteader, which is different in the motivations. Preppers prepare for the end of the world, I love to garden and love animals, and I'm poor, so for me this is a money saving, hobby type adventure. He just thinks it's a political move, as more and more of the world gets sick. Just because you personally know no one who has had covid, doesn't mean it's not true.

I'm so afraid I'm going to lose my mom to Covid. She's 82, kind of frail but a real firecracker. I love her so much. I know we all have to push through this doing the best we can to take care of each other, and I know some people won't, but I'm going to try harder to help. Since I'm moving and don't want to take all the stuff in my cabinets, I'm going to donate all unopened food to the food bank. I have lots for Goodwill now that they are opened.

Stay safe, my friends!

Preppers prepare for the end of the world,

Not necessarily true. Many preppers prepare for a specific event. For me, that's hurricanes. For many others it's different (fires, tornadoes, pandemics, etc) but not all, and I'd say most don't, prepare for the entire end of the world. As a homesteader, I'd say you'd be prepared for a large local event to happen like that. Or even global, such as a pandemic.

ETA: Preparedness (or what prepper stands for) is to be prepared for any local, national, or worldwide event that may make life harder. Grocery stores not being stocked (like now or like right before any hurricane), or for the electric grid to go down for any length of time, or riots in your neighborhood, etc.

It doesn't matter. He is prepping for the end of the world. So are the other folks I know who are preppers. There are a group of people with certain political views who are called "preppers". That's what I was referring to. Not people who have a stockpile of stuff in case of a probable incident. I wasn't talking about everyone who prepares for a valid event. This isn't even about covid.

Ok, I just got my blood tests back from before I was on steroids, and they are high. I have no fever, just a cough which could be from this dust. I will be so bummed if I have to quarantine for 14 days, but it is what it is. I'll have the movers leave my computer and mattress, and hang out here until closing. I've been cleaning a lot so at least the inspector won't get sick. I'll be in the backyard until he's finished. then head to the front yard. I have an appointment with the doctor, I'll have to call and see if I should come in. Pandemics, they are quite bothersome.

It is 'information chaos' here in Texas. The numbers are soaring for infected people. Houston is a hot spot and also has International Airport.

9,782 new cases reported today
2,918 fatalities (to date)
105 deaths today

9,689 people in hospitals.

And it's just getting worse. A 30 yr old man in Houston died today. He went to a ' Covid Party'. Apparently this party was saying the virus is a hoax. I don't even know what to say about this.

@DharmaGirl , I hope everything is ok and it's just from you packing and moving things. Please keep us updated.

Small businesses here in town are shutting their doors. Apparently they couldn't get financial aid and are out of business.

Don't know what it is going to take for people to realize this is deadly and very serious. Everyone, please stay safe.

ETA: There is a good documentary on Hulu about Dr's and Nurses in New York City at the beginning of the virus. Very sobering to hear their stories about not being able to save lives and not having what they need for themselves or the patients.

Isn't it awful to get up everyday and check how many people have died of Covid overnight? I have to stop doing that.

^Completely agree. I have stopped actively seeking that information. I know it's getting worse every day. Last time I looked I was really anxious because the reported cases & mortality rate are probably not accurate. A lot of places and countries simply don't have the means to collate and report this information in a timely manner.

But somehow though not by intentional means, I am told information about this virus. It makes me worried for those that I love & my own mortality like would I survive the infection etc. So I have to stop myself.

I'm not under any restrictions atm but even so, every time I think of going somewhere, doing something that involves being in the proximity of other people I'm evaluating the necessity of it. Most times I convince myself it's better to stay at home & not risk it.

I'm not checking every day. But since I live 40miles west of the hot spot, it's only common sense, for me, to check and see what is going on.

The surrounding counties are also being hit hard. Majority of people are wearing masks NOW that it has become more REAL for them, I've stayed safe since it began. But I do have a granddaughter in the Houston area. So ya. I want to know what's going on.

I stopped doing that a while back cause its just triggering and yeah, makes me panic either way. This needs me rational and when I panic I get super irrational. So, since I'm working from home still, I just stay home. Only go out for necessities about once a month or for doctors. Mask up when I do go. Keep my distance from everyone. And run in and out of places very quickly. I'll turn the news on for a few mins every once in a while to try to catch up to know where we are when it comes to the phase reopening and where the numbers are but a few mins is all I can do cause after that I start to panic. I haven't figured out a way to control panic and keep up on the news yet.

I don't panic anymore. I, like you, mask up and wash frequently, put I can't control anything but my behaviors so I work on stopping the panicking. My doc knows a doc near where I'm moving, and says it's a hotbed of Covid since most folks won't mask up. She said it's spreading like wildfire out there and the hospital system has their emergency plan in effect. I don't know how she knows this since the testing isn't showing that, but opinions are like assholes, everyone has one. She also said everyone will end up getting it, which I already figured out, so my plan is to remain as healthy as possible. Ha- just lost a stepdad, my beloved service dog, I'm moving etc. I am meditating again to relieve stress.

I'm happy to see that there are signs on the highway that remind people to drive carefully, don't go anywhere you don't need to, and wash hands. I think the leadership in my state is good, slow reopening, going back a phase when needed. That's the scientific way and it is working for my state. I just hope we stay in phase 2 another day since moving day is tomorrow.
