Anyone tried Wellbutrin XL?
My GP unfortunately pretty much blows off PTSD, even though she knows what I have been through. She seems to think I can just and should just push myself out of this state. It makes me feel ashamed asking for help,as if I am weak. She will not give time of day for PTSD. Finally she said, well try Wellbutrin XL? Anyone tried? I am scared of trying because it was sort of handed to me like take this and go away...not , let's see if this might help.
any thoughts anyone?

I have been on Welbutrin before and it made me rage. It is different for each person. As far as feeling blown off goes, I think you should try a psychiatrist. GP are not really qualified to diagnose something like PTSD. They are just medical doctors. JMO

Take care, Morgan

I agree with Morgan. You should see a Psychiatrist because they will have a better understanding of your symptoms and know what medication to prescribe you.

I've been on Wellbutrin off and on for 10 years. At 150 mg it helps out OK, but when I was taking 300 mg, I could get agitated very easy. It also made me loose 20-25 pounds.

Right now I'm taking 75 mg a day and it's doing OK

I was given Welbutrin as my GP at the time said it was used off label for neuropathy & fibromyalgia??? Little did I know people with a history of seizures are not suppose to take Welbutrin. After taking it I started getting seizure auras after I had not had a seizure since I was a little kid! I stopped taking it and never went back to that doctor. Years later I told my neuropsychologist about that and she absolutely couldn't believe I was given Welbutrin without being asked if I had history of seizure.

As far as your situation goes if a GP won't listen to you go to a psychologist. Seriously I thought only psychologists, neuropsychologists and psychiatrists were the only ones had any business diagnosing PTSD. If you are suffering with this go to a psych because those people are used to dealing with PTSD and can recognize it when they see it. GP's aren't really trained to deal with it.

I was taking 600mgs a day it was horriable I accidentilly took four pills at once and thought I od not good 900mgs bad for business.

Haven't tried the XL, but regular Wellbutrin helps me for depression, mental fogginess/lack of concentration and lethargy. For hypervigilance, anxiety and other hyperarousal symptoms, Wellbutrin isn't usually used, since it's more a dopamine/arousal drug.

When I'm highly symptomatic, I can use Wellbutrin and an SSRI together with good results. When I'm not as symptomatic, I tend toward depression/inaction, so the Wellbutrin can assist.

I strongly agree with others' suggestions to get to a doctor who can help you. If you can't even agree on what's wrong, how can you agree on a treatment plan? I dumped a doc who was certain I had panic disorder.

Tammy,

I can't believe you lost weight on Welbutrin. I thought I had heard that it was bad for causing weight gain?!

I am on welbutrin now been taking it for almost a month and so far I like it makes me have more energy and it keeps me from smoking a lot of cigarettes. I've also lost weight as well
for some reason I'm not that hungry and I am more active. But the most important thing is it makes me a little bit happier and that's the best thing ever.

I was on Wellbutrin for two weeks before having to get off of it... I was more anxious and fidgety and overall it wasn't a good experience. I was originally put on it to treat depression but when I saw my new p-doc she noted taht sometimes it causes adverse effects for PTSD symptoms... each person is different so the story goes...

I was put on wellbutrin in the mid-90's and although it helped my depression, it gave me horrible raging screaming bloody nightmares.

Now I think it brought down my defenses...and without the benefit of having appropriate PTSD diagnosis, skills, and pacing in place to help me heal. Just re-traumatized me further and turned me off asking for help.

I'll say this...NO doc should EVER be prescribing psych meds without an appropriate referral, assessment, and therapeutic mental health professionals on board.

When our society finally realizes this, they'll look at the way traumatized people get treated as a shameful time in the history of medicine.

Please....find a doc with SOME kinda trauma training if you can. Your life is worth more than their ignorance.

Wellbutrin does make you lose weight. If you read the drug insert it advises not to give to peope with anorexia nervosa because they will lose more weight.

I know this is terrible, but sometimes I tell MD's that I'm depressed when I realize I'm getting to fat. I tell them wellbutrin always helps me.
