Gardening

Had to water everything this morning I’m always worried about the water bans but it’s not worse than a long shower. It’s been dry so far in August. I hope we start getting afternoon showers .

The first pic is a bed I made on the corner under that bush. I put three Lillies and three moonflowers . This giant thing is one of the moonflowers it took the whole bed over. I have them all over the yard but this is the only giant it’s about 5 feet tall.

I picked my first big tomatoes took longer than I expected it’s September. I waited as long as I could and there’s a tiny bit of green on them but I’m glad I didn’t wait any longer, they’re ready. Tomato and cheese sandwiches for lunch.

One particularly cold & overcast summer -it never got past 60F, when it usually at least hits 80 for a few days here & there-I had hundreds of pounds of green tomatoes to deal with. (Apx 50lbs per plant, just a handful of plants).

There is -come to find- a helluva lotta amazing things to make/preserve with green tomatoes.

The movie Fried Green Tomatoes which we loved, made me realize it was a dish. Something that had never occurred to me. They’re delicious. So are this years ripe ones .

I got going finally on the yard, everything is going in the compost. Even the bushes which are almost too much for me now climbing the ladder with the electric hedge clippers . I chop up everything with the lawn mower. I start with it on the highest setting, throw everything on the lawn and keep running it over and lowering the level and dump it in the compost. I picked mom one last bunch of flowers for her birthday and mine and my daughter and my mother (passed away). All within 8 days this month . Homespun flowers . I got a nice bunch of catnip too for his nibs, I’m drying it .

I am vexed.

2mo ago I was not up to getting my seedlings started (indoors, with grow light, & fan to flatten them / bulk up their stalks…. Looooove watching the puny flattened seedlings start being able to lean against the fan; making thick fat stalks, that are nutrient 6 lane highways instead of pedestrian avenues).

This month I’m not up to planting. (Above non-existent seedlings, late start varieties, or bought-cheaters).

It’s a durn good thing my garden no longer feeds us. Because it soooooo wouldn’t feed us. As it ain’t gonna happen this year. I’m rarely even up for growing sprouts in a jar, this year. Much less food & medical gardens. >.<
We had a good year with tomatoes. They were late like the end of August but there were lots comparatively and we enjoyed them. It could be because I took your advice and didn’t use miracle grow on them idk, but it was fun .

My babies. They keep me company all winter. As you see there is a resident spider on the small one . It’s so tiny I need almost a magnifying glass but it’s there. High risk living choice . Based on the carnage, meaning dead bodies it spits out all summer, spiders are a very popular menu item. I thought it would be a difficult plant but anything but, its resilience is wonderful. I killed the little one at least twice, but it just keeps coming back. The little engine that could.
