Gardening

A friend gave me a pot of Vinca and it’s doing well but got a ferocious aphid population. Its pot was near aphid resistant plants (datura, jade plant, aloe) so I decided to let it battle them itself. Also baby lizards live out there so I wanted to provide food for the food chain. I noticed them a couple weeks ago. The plant seemed to respond by producing less chlorophyll and growing a little leggy but also it might have been adjusting to the shady north side of the building. Anyway, this morning I went out to water and saw that the juicy green aphids were all dark and crispy. And some tiny larva, maybe beetle(?), were crawling near. They reminded me of ladybird larvae (flattish and creeping) but much tinier, so maybe there’s a variety of beetles that go after aphids.

So cool when I be patient and give it time and something steps in. To be fair I once had an aphid population on kale that nothing rescued me from and I told myself that for that plant species next time I would give it help. But that was a whole bunch of kale in a garden that I was looking forward to eating. This Vinca was just a token gift.

Oh also invested in a sprouting jar and going to try getting into a sprouts routine and try to eat them with my meals. I am starting with alfalfa. I have a whole collection of seeds to sprout: alfalfa, clover, mung, pea, lentil, wheat, and buckwheat. I have sprouted mung beans before but I did it in a colander with a towel.

Feeling grateful for my canna lily, sticking with me through my neglect of the plants and giving color. And also feeling grateful for the datura plant. The leaves are so symmetrical and vibrant and big.

That’s great I had more fun with those Datura last year. I don’t think I’m going to do as much this year, and I don’t think the Datura will come back. I have a bucket of seeds from last year I’m planning to throw them on the dune down the beach where I found them originally.
