The Marketing Of Madness - Are We All Insane?

I agree with everything you have said a3a2... but the issue is above the researcher IMO... many even get frustrated when they find something that does help an area, but the company (the higher power) won't manufacture it because there is no money in it, even though it helps a minority area.

Pharma has a lot of issues at the top levels... not the chemist / researcher level.

I can buy that, Anthony. Completely. This year I was told that the medication that provides my husband the most relief from his chronic pain would no longer be made. Fortunately, with the help of his specialist, we were able to locate a lab who would make it just for him.

I do want to add something about medication for ptsd. I don't think medication should be the first avenue explored. It really bothers me when I hear that someone went to their GP, got diagnosed with ptsd and immediately got handed some pills. I really think the first avenue must be therapy. And then, medication if it is warrented. Both my therapist and eventually my psych wanted to see I was really making an effort to do this without meds before they would consider them.

When my husband was first put on an ssri, the GP did not even follow up on him. When my husband told her that the pain was still there, she just upped the dose repeatedly until his overdose took over our lives. Carefull monitoring is a must, and I think this is best done by a specialist, not a GP.

On the other hand, I resent the smugness of many who don't think meds should be used.

Adrian, I have great sympathy for you and your position, especially in light of your son-in-law. I regret not recognizing your pain sooner. As I have mentioned, this is a real trigger for me, and sometimes it is difficult for me to see beyond my own pain and anger. Thank you for allowing me this thread to explore my trigger and hopefully desensatize myself to it a bit.

Thanks everybody for replying to this thread. I think it's good for us to question what the so called experts say and do. Also it's good for us to disagree with each other, it all helps in a small way to make us stronger. As long as we realise we are all in this struggle together and want to help each other, we will be better for being on this forum.

I completely agree for a good majority of cases... GP's shouldn't be handling meds for mental illness IMHO, they should only be handled by psychiatrists / psychologists, and never as a first line approach.
