November 11th Day Services

I can Sandra, there are a lot of sick people in this world. I'm glad there are a lot of us good ones to balance things out!

I believe I recall from a past discussion that our November 11 holiday (we call it Veterans Day in the USA) has a somewhat different history/meaning than your November 11 holiday. However, I will accompany my daughter as she participates in a parade that ends at our local veterans hospital where she and her fellow girl scouts will visit with hospitalized veterans.

We call it Remembrance Day here in Canada.

Armistice day here, also known as Remembrance Day - 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month when the guns fell silent at the end of WW1. Services are held on the nearest Sunday and called Remembrance Sunday.

Historically, in the USA November 11 was also Armistice Day. However, in the 1950's (I believe) it was officially changed to Veterans Day. It is a day to thank and honor all who have served honorably in our military--past or present, in wartime or peacetime.

We also have a Memorial Day which we observe in May. It is a day for honoring members of the military who died serving our country.

We have a parade here with Veterans in the forefront. It's rather large procession that stretches through the main scenic route. This area loves a parade. At the end there is a picnic. There are a lot of Veterans in our area, my Brothers excluded - close but on not in the immediate area.

I cannot believe I have not been able to find anyone selling poppies where we live.

How bad is that, even the ladies in the post office did not know of anywhere either.

To be honest am am appalled at this. :mad: Strong words from me on such a calm day.

And this year we had, the 11th second of the 11th minute of the hour of the 11th day of the 11 month in the year 11.

Controversially I don't wear a poppy. I always donate and put money in the box but for personal reasons I can't wear the red poppy.

I live in a v small town (pop under 7000). We have a memorial green with our Cenotaph. There was a short service this morning. I was at work so couldn't attend however I went and stood in outside the door so I could listen to the bugle and there I did my 2 minute silence. A couple of cars stopped but most drove by, oblivious to what was happening

They will also be having the parade this Sunday. They end up back at the Cenotaph and lay more wreaths. I remember when I was younger we went to watch the parade since my father was marching in it. He was on the corvettes on convoy in the Canadian Navy.

At today's service there will be thousands there. It's always nice to see so many go to pay their respects.
