What Did You Eat As A Child?

Sorry I joined this thread late.

I was fortunate that I grew up with diversity. I wish my parents were mire strict on fast food, but fortunately my eating habits are good now! I actually took it upon myself to change in college.

Britt - you ate cake batter in dry form??!! Or do you mean the batter made from the boxed product?!

Some of the stories really saddened me. It us horrible to treat kids so cruelly.

Catjudo, I have a friend who for years only ate 3 foods. Literally! Hamburgers/cheeseburgers (no lettuce or tomato), pepperoni pizza (no other toppings ever!), and chicken nuggets. Aye the horror! Over time I got him to try a few things. He said food is just energy to him, not a pleasurable experience. Even that made my eyes roll - energy from McNuggets??!!

Some kids really go through phases of eating for years!!!! At least she eats some variety. My friend's daughter only eats mac and cheese and spaghetti. I have a friend that only eats meat, bread, and rice. Doesn't like sauces. Some kids use it as a control factor. I think time will tell also as you see her how her health is progressing.

For those struggling with eating disorders, I hope you find new ways to stay nourished and eventually enjoy the foods that used to bring pain. :)

The majority of these foods my daughter would not touch for anything. The couple things on that list she will eat, have very specific parameters that have to be met in order to make it possible for her to eat.

At least. Ha. That's easy to say for the person who doesn't have to count firm, red grapes before she puts them on her daughter's plate or in her lunchbox because her daughter ceases to be able to eat if there are an odd number of grapes. LOL ;)

And in all honesty there is very little variety. She really eats the same breakfast, lunch and dinner almost every day. Every once in a while she'll start to get bored with what she's eating, but then she's not willing to try new things either. When that happens it can be a stressful few weeks until she settles into finding what she's happy with eating.

She's a lot of work...it's a good thing I love her so much.

As a child I always ate home cooked food, never a choice, but we never went hungry.

Sundays was always full cooked breakfast with everyone together, and usually a roast dinner of some kind later on the afternoon.

Fast food was not heard of when I was small, and fish and chips bought in was a luxury.

My dad was a great baker, so always home made cakes in the tins.

As a young child I remember my guardian and mother had wonderful things to eat at dinner. Beef stew, chicken with curry rice and soy sauce, spanish rice, once a week we'd get burgers from the local place that sold them 2 for a dollar that night. But as a teen when my mom moved out, there was nothing unless I cooked it myself, and then around age 15, there was nothing at all unless I waited for my guardian to get home from work around 9 or 10 at night(and then she'd get fast food on her way home).

I remember being so hungry I got into the year supply my guardian kept in the garage from years ago and eating expired beans and rice that didn't cook right. I used to ration it so I'd have food for the week. I hated that the most. I have a hard time letting my own kids ever go hungry because I know what that feels like. I lost a lot of weight during that time, went down 3 sizes. Sure I was skinny and fit into the 'cool' clothes, but I was miserable. I'm really lucky my spanish teacher at the time used to corner me with a v8 at lunch and watch me to make sure I drank it. I don't know how he knew I was starving, but I'll always love him for realizing it.

Because of my father's occupation, we always had food in the house especially meat. My father worked at a grocery store, in the meat department, and he sure knew his cuts of meat. This is the same occupation that his father had.

He even owned a locker plant when we lived in a small town. I saw him prepare hamburger, etc. and I had the job when it was needed of sweeping the sawdust up.

With both of my parents working, I would come home after school, and find a note about "what's for supper." It could be a meatloaf that my mother had prepared before she left for work, etc. It was my responsibility to have supper ready when they got home from work.

My father sure liked his job, and would brag about a roast that he would bring home, etc. Just too bad, he didn't know how to brag about or give attention to his kids!

..it's just a food thing.
Catjudo,
I have to say that the amount of eating disorder flavoured behaviour she displays is marked. And it does not sound like a small issue. For the super market to be so aware says a lot.

Do you think she inadvertently uses it to get her needs met? In other words to get attention. I don't mean that in a bad way at all. I wonder how good she is at verbalising her feelings and saying when she is sad or angry. Or if she is possibly the good girl that quietly fades into the background other than with food.
