Starting To Find Humor In A Trigger

Looking back, I can actually see some humor in one of my most common triggers. I have a noise sensitivity that, when triggered, can cause me to go into an emotional flashback accompanied by intense muscle tension and self harm. Well, one of my common triggers happens to be when I flush the toilet at work - it's such a loud toilet flush! You can laugh if you want - I know it sounds ridiculous!

Before, I would clench up, couldn't focus, get tense, irritated and angry and punch the wall or engage in other self harm. Now, my new routine is quick - flush it - then plug both of my ears. Then laugh at how ridiculous I am.

Sometimes it still triggers me but it's becoming less common and I can see some humor in the ridiculousness of the whole thing. I consider than a baby step forward.

Good idea, @DMerish. Let's generate a business plan. We'll be back here on this forum in a year or so....

"Any PTSD sufferers with noise sensitivity, especially whilst flushing a toilet? We have JUST THE TOOL FOR YOU! Flush Muffs are a one-of-a-kind item perfect for your deepest toilet noise fears. Better than sticking your fingers in your ears while on the "throne," these little brown foam tubes plug your ears up so you can get unplugged without fear, so to speak. I think I'm going off the deep end with this one...
