Sufferer Need Some Advice

I've been dealing with depression/suicidal thoughts for a couple years now. It stemmed from a childhood experience. The only person I told my feelings to was my best friend. I just recently moved away from her and it has been really hard. One night I unloaded to my mom about my thoughts and she told my dad also. They got me to see a psychiatrist who diagnosed me with PTSD. The one major problem I've been having is getting motivation. Most mornings, I don't even want to get up. I make excuses so I don't have to shower. I was a 4.0 student but I can't even get motivation for homework so my grades are dropping. I need to find a way to get motivation. I can't keep living like this.

Hello SassySissy101. Welcome to the forum. I feel for you. I have and still sometimes deal with what you are going through.

Here are two helpful suggestions I have received that have worked for me (sometimes not, but I kept to these ones the most).

1. Work on something for only five minutes. Then go do something you want to do. Return to that thing later and do 5 minutes again. Repeat the next day. After a few weeks, notice if you have the same resistance (lack of motivation can create an "I don't wanna" sort of resistance) or if it lessened. If it's lessening, it's a good sign.

2. Make an accomplishment list. Get yourself a white board or just a paper and pencil. When you did something you are glad you completed, like getting up at a certain time, taking a shower, you write that down on your accomplishment list. It's not a list of things to do. It's a list of accomplishments. You write it down after you've done them.

Best of luck,

LD

Its hard, i know, im going through this right now.

Exersize releases the same endiphines cutting does (im a cutter) which are the 'feel good' chemical in your brain so exersise in the morning?

Make small goals to hit...like im gonna do this amount of homework or do it this long and stick to it.

A lot of times studying can take your mind off the depression/suicide

Pick up some after school stuff that you like

Draw/paint/be creative some how

Spend time with friends

Just a few idea. Gosh, it was forever ago i was in school BUT i was also suicidal since i was 8 so i get how hard that is. I hope some of these help!

In regards to having no motivation in the morning, what helps me during times like those is to write down goals for myself to complete. I'm not talking about huge goals but small ones like brushing your teeth, spreading your bed, or arranging your desk. When I check off each little thing it makes me feel a sense of accomplishment. I completely understand though how hard it can be especially when you feel this way.

I also agree with @lostforgottensoul to use exercising as a way to release your endorphin's. Another big thing would be to get out of the house and have a change of scenery.

Have you talked to your psychiatrist about how you're struggling in school? You could explain to them your situation and request that they write notes to your teachers for homework/project extensions. That's what I do and it really makes a difference.

I'm so sorry to hear that you're struggling right now. Please hang in there!

Hi sassy sissy, I'm sorry to hear of your struggles. What hurts about not getting out of bed? Think about al the reasons why it sucks to allow defeat to control you, and get mad. And alternatively, definitely list 3 things that you did/can do that make you pat yourself on the back! #1 can be, joining this to reach out to others! :) Celebrate any successes, large or small.
I listen to Tony Robbins, a LOT, on youtube...he teaches about retraining our bad habits a lot, maybe check him out? Ultimately you will do what you're doing until it hurts too much to continue. So, if you're ready to get help here, you're ready to get mad! Why should you be the one to lay in bed, depressed? Why is that fair?! It's not!
You can reclaim your vibrancy, as soon as you're ready. My advice would be to accept that you feel stuck. It's ok! Be stuck. And when you're ready to, just get up, hop out of bed. One foot in front of the other...you can do it! Smile at yourself in the mirror.

@SassySissy101 Welcome! :)

Recovery from depression takes time and added stress doesn't help the recovery. Reach out to your academic adviser to see what assistance is available so you have options that might lessen the stress in this area.
