Taking a step back from the nitty gritty tactics of how to commit an atrocity, where and when.

can we have a look at the strategy side? the why do it? and the who benefits from doing it?

If we take the orthodox mainstream account that 9/11 was al qaeda, and the aim was to kill Americans as revenge for American sins in places where there are muslim majorities...

Then it was a stunning success. The increased restrictions on air travel, and people's reluctance to fly resulted in another 3K or so americans dying in road accidents in the months following, compared to the established trend line of road traffic deaths.

Going a couple of levels deeper ( NYT or WaPo, as opposed to CNBC CNN or Faux), It significantly upped the profile of the name al qaeda, and it served to polarise and divide moslems (ok I've probably spelled it about 15 different ways already) from other sorts of americans
In traditional nationalist/racist/religionist terms, it advances the idea that different peoples can't possibly live together

On a much deeper level (but still widely known ammongst people who follow this shit) The response which Bush the Dumber, Cheney, fellow neo-cons and the police-military-industrial complex were enticed into, has:

lead to annoyance and worse for many ordinary people going about their every day lives (TSA, Patriot act etc)
alienated many of the more libertarian minded Americans.
Lead the neo-cons into ridiculous military over-stretch
Outed Bush and Cheney as religious millenialists (check out all the speeches about "America's destiny to do god's work")
Shown the world just what a bunch of imperialist barbarians...

But in terms of any long term personal gains for the guys who were supposed to be al qaeda's leadership - all they got was a bit of narcissistic supply and a bunch of young losers running to join them. Millions of Moslem's are now poorer or outright homeless unemployed or dead.

In the current geopolitical climate--the way you describe this can go from Black powder and Nails to Thermonuclear---with not many steps---Christians and Atheist alike know the world will end in fire but these 'neocons' and Trump nuts want it to--I was really hoping that we could just wait for the sun to eat us up--.

Not long ago I dismissed WWIII as a possibility but now it's in the tea leaves, on the table, in the cards as a reasonable possibility

Not to worry once most see the flash it's already over a few will get the blast wave but that's not too bad---and even if all 25 teratons of thermonuclear explosive energy were used some will live---think positive---:(

There is a very long list of known "false flags", orchestrated by leaders or would be leaders in order to have people come to them for protection, or to stay with them for protection.

There are other reasons for false flag attacks, such as justifying a policy that was unjustifiable in any other way.

Probably the most widely know example is the burning of the German parliament building and a subsequent rash of terrorism in Germany in the early 1930's, all orchestrated by the national socialists, and highly successful in convincing enough of the German population to accept Hitler's leadership as the price of restoring a degree of order.

Other lesser known examples include the Tsarist secret police in late 19th century and early 20th century Russia, orchestrating supposed Anarcho-Communist bombings, shootings and robberies, to convince the Russian people that that was the only alternative to the Tsar.

Stalin's artillery, shelling the Russian town of Mainilla, so the shelling could be blamed on the Finn's as a pretext for the soviet winter invasion of Finland. The Nazi equivalent was the Gliewitz incident, in which nazi storm troops dressed in Polish uniforms "captured" a German radio station and broadcast fake Polish propaganda. The incident was used as a pretext for the nazi invasion of Poland.

More recent known false flags include terrorism orchestrated by "Gladio" as a means of scaring the populations on continental Europe (and especially Italy) away from supporting leftist parties, and into accepting the amazingly corrupt christan democrats, and NATO.

and, Russian secret police, blowing up apartment blocks in Moscow in order to paint Yeltsin as a "weak" leader, hence bringing Putin to power, and as a pretext for another war in Chechnya. (Alexander Litvinienko, documented and published this in the west, and was subsequently poisoned using polonium)

If 9/11 was a "False Flag", then, Who Gained?

• Establishment control freaks - there is no way that American's would have swallowed the "Patriot Act" without a 9/11 style justification.
• Fe'ral employees, especially in the 3 letter agencies have increased in number and budgets
• Military suppliers and military budgets (and lucrative job opportunities for retiring military procurement personnel )
  
• The crony consultancy and contracting firms who get to build bases and airstrips during the war and occupation phases, and who get to "re-construct" when the war is over.
  
• Even the owners of the WTC site, who got rid of buildings that were suffering from high maintenance costs and low occupancy rates.

I suspect that if it was a missile, it was a f*ckup.

now that was interesting. When I was a kid, Lockerbie was the nearest skating rink. I sort of know the area. and a few folks around there.
American guys were there within an hour of stuff landing on the town, and were asking where the drugs were.
Even if they were to set off the second the plane hit the place, and drove like lunatics.

There's no where within an hour and a half's drive that those sort of guys were likely to be stationed, and then there's the delay in getting word to them.

Supposedly two of the guys who were on that flight, had been to see what Oliver North was upto, in terms of arms and drugs smuggling, and they didn't approve. Their report never got home.

The drugs were found.

On balance, I think that the incentives for committing a false flag attack are a lot more convincing than any incentives that might exist for a group to use terrorism in its own name.

And there are big incentives out there for lots more "terrorism"

With the exception of Ron Paul, and perhaps one or two others. Politicians and senior regime figures, are not known for empathy, compassion or truthfulness.

Instead, they live on the proceeds of taxes and quantitative easing. Actions that if we tried them as individuals, would be called extortion and counterfeiting, and we could expect to be caged for them.

Carlo Ponzi went to prison for the type of scheme that bears his name. Bernie Maddoff, committed suicide before he got to court for his Ponzi scheme.

A Ponzi Scheme, has no underlying investment or assets, the benefits of the scheme are paid for from incoming money. As soon as people decide to draw money out at anything that aproaches the rate that money is coming in, the scheme will collapse.

That is exactly the structure of national insurance and state pension schemes throughout the world (the idea was begun by Bismark, and long pre-dates Carlo Ponzi). The "assets" that they contain (if any) are government bonds, which are merely promises to tax the population in the future, or to print more paper dollars (which dilute the purchasing power of the paper dollars already in circulation, and acts effectively as an invisible tax, and means of redistributing existing wealth).

Perhaps most politicians are too dumb to understand or to question. but for those that aren't too dumb. Continuing to extort, counterfeit and operate Ponzi schemes, rather than blow the whistle and stop them before any more people are hurt by them - I think reveals their true natures.

Their actions are not "leadership", they're abuse.

How to keep people attached to and under the sway of such abusers?

One of the tools is constant fear, and the offer of the illusion of safety.

All of the time I can remember (I'm round about my half century, give or take a few years) Britain has had constant terrorist scares, and draconian special powers are renewed annually.
I don't have sufficeint evidence to say that they are all false flag attacks or manipulated - but from what has come out about security force and intelligence service penetration and collusion on both sides of Irish terrorism, and from the time scale and play book so strongly resembling those of Gladio (which as of about 1990 we defnitely know that Gladio was orchestrated by "parallel structures" within NATO and European states)

yeah, I suspect that a lot of that terrorism was orchestrated from within the British state.

In the present sense of looking at the evidence that we have, and looking at the incentives that people are responding to. What you are feeling is not paranoia, It's the feeling of waking up.
