I made a conscious decision today to stop seeing my latest therapist. He was therapist #5 and was provided free of charge through my employee assistance program...but he was truly terrible.

I should of realized it from the first visit when he answered his cell phone in the middle of our session. Or maybe it was the fact that he never had any Kleenex in his office and would go into the bathroom and get me a few squares of toilet paper to dry my tears.

Or perhaps it was the last visit when he had his toothbrush and toothpaste sitting on the table in front of me for the entire session.

But, I think what really did it in for me was when he told me that he knew how I felt because "He had anxiety as well" and pulled out his medication bottle to show me for good measure. I wonder if that was a strategy they taught him in therapist school?

Anyway, I have now bitten the bullet and got in touch with a private group of psychologists who treat a lot of military, police officers, EMT's, firemen, etc with PTSD. They are also all certified in EMDR.

It has become apparent to me that I need to do *something* because using the EAP provided therapists is getting me nowhere fast.

I am hopeful that this new group of psychologists can help me out of this hole that my life has become....but Jeez Louise, it isn't going to come cheap, unfortunately, as they charge an arm and a leg for their services. But I feel I cannot keep living like this anymore.

Is EMDR going to be my salvation?

Stay tuned......

Wow - Kai and I thought my therapist was awful but at least he has Kleenex;).

I am glad you decided to make a change and it sounds like it's a step in the right direction. EMDR can be very effective in treating PTSD symptoms.

Good Luck.

Sheesh, pulling out a cellphone in the middle of a session would have done it for me right then and there. Good for you for making yourself a priority. Who cares if it's expensive!?! Your happieness and well being are what matter more than anything. It's an investment. Think of it like spending extra money at the grocery store to get fruits and vegetables or organic foodstuff. It's not buying food, it's investing in your health.

Find out and let me know what cereal box he got his degree from. I would avoid that brand. :)

Hope you find therapist that fits your needs.

ronin47 is right. You are investing in yourself and your health. Some advice I should take myself in my search.
