General A Form Letter For Carers From A Therapist On Behalf Of Sufferers

There is a wonderful letter that most of us with PTSD wish we could write. A therapist wrote it on his site. He says sufferers may wish to use this as a means to know what to say or tell those who are not sure about what PTSD is so that they can better comprehend the behaviors they are seeing.

I think it is so well put that I recommend printing this out and hanging it on the fridge. When PTSD strikes, you can see how well it fits the letter's description and when we can't tell you, we can just point to this document. Sometimes, it is so hard to even know what's going on.

When I am triggered, I know something is happening, but I find it very difficult to explain it or even think about it in words, so I can't explain it to someone else at all.

Here it is. Please take the time to read this. Link Removed

Thank you all Carers! Your support makes a difference each day. Just knowing you have our backs makes life go so much better.

I would like to add to the letter by saying that even when we wake up grouchy from nightmares, and we seem triggered first thing in the morning, and we seem angry, we are glad to see you, and are deeply grateful to have you there. Just keep telling us we are good people having a bad day. Muse

This was really good Muse. Thank you. It is important to get understanding for ptsd. I have gotten alot of help and support being on this site. It has speeded up my healing process. What a wonderful letter.

Muse your next post was moved to [DLMURL]https://www.ptsdforum.org/c/threads/a-therapists-view-on-having-children-with-ptsd.25056/[/DLMURL] as it was off topic being about PTSD Sufferers having children and no longer about Supporters.

Beverly, did this letter bring that up for you? I think the letter, itself, implies that a reader who is trying to understand exists. The people here might be that for you. I hope you can find this as a basic need.

"....but people to whom it does happen can heal the wounds in their mind, get on with their life, and no longer be tripped up by what happened to them in the past."

Is this suggesting that PTSD can be cured rather than just "managed"?

Muse, I wanted to thank you for this letter. I came across this thread when you first posted. I've been procrastinating some, but I eventually (soon) want to hand that letter out to people and business I deal with.

To the average person who is clueless about PTSD, it's a good starting point, much better than the letters I tried writing myself. However, I'm considering adding an personal introduction to the letter, which would include a blanket statement indicating that this information just barely nicks the surface of describing the levels of severity and complexity of symptoms PTSD sufferers experience in their daily life.

Again, Thanks
