A Little Help Please

My name is Sara. I'm 25. Live in Iowa, US. I've recently been diagnosed with PTSD. Not from combat or anything. Just a weird and twisted childhood that broke me when I watched my mother die, and got worse when my only support person left.

I'm trying to find somewhere where I can feel comfortable. Feel like someone understands. I'm at my wits end and I hope this support group helps.

Ok. I'm gonna try to give my story.

I'm the product of an affiar. Givent he husbands last name to try to cover it. They split, as well as her and father did. Mother was emotionally abusive my entire childhood. Growing up being told, "The only reason I didn't abort you is because the doctors said your were going to be a boy." and things of that nature almost daily. Getting in trouble for things out of my control.

She married one guy who was physically abusive towards me. Married another who was emotionally abusive. I got raped at 13, told her because I had no idea what to do. Her solution: "If you woulda put out, it wouldn't have been as bad."

At 16, run away from home, and have never been back. Attended the same HS, worked full time, and was homeless. She never looked for me once in those 2 years until I was done.

So, at 20, I become pregnant, and she has breast cancer. I start talking to her again. NOthing changes between us. Still horribly emotionally abusive. I was in an abusive realtionship at the time also. I left him. Then she comes down with Bone marrow cancer. I watched her die on her death bed and started having PTSD symptoms. And when the guy I was dating at the time left me, I snapped. Went to the hospital and got diagnoised. Periods of amneisa. Nothing seems real. I don't talk to any of my friends, detaching from everyone, or do any of my normal activities. Flashbacks. Can't eat or sleep. I can't stand it.

But this is my story. Everyday is a struggle just to get through. My meds they put me on haven't done anything thus far, but it has also only been a week. The sleeping pill I'm on does wonders most nights.

Thank heavens you are sleeping.....and welcome to the forum.

You'll find a lot of people here who understand and can support and help you when your down.

I'm sorry about your abuse....of course. The damage it leaves is uncomprehensible to most.

Hi Sara, I feel for you having been in a similar situation and suffering from the detachment and unreality which for me was the worst thing. Many times I felt like I was trapped behind a wall of glass, through which I could see everything, but feel nothing. It was terrifying. Now however I can feel again. Talking is the best thing, and now instead of fighting the flashbacks, I allow myself to feel them, as long as I am alone or with a trusted friend.
Good luck and hang in there!

Hi Sara, I'm glad you found this forum. I have found some excellent information here, and I hope you do also. I'm sorry about your experiences, and I wish they were happier ones for you. Good luck with everything, but remember you can always come and post here when you are feeling alone. The people here are pretty great.

Sara,

I'm sorry you had to go through all of that as a child. It's good you are getting treatment for your ptsd and you have found a wonderful place here. There are so many great people!

Jen

Welcome Sara

Sara,

I am glad you are getting help and you found this forum.

I am sorry to hear you had such a rough childhood. You must be a very strong person. What your mother said to you was wrong. You did not deserve any of the abuse you suffered. Your mother was also wrong about rape... rape is a vicious hate crime and there is not much in this world that can make it any easier. You are important to this world and you have the potential to do a lot of good. I hope the medication starts working soon. I would suggest keeping track of your symptoms and your reactions to the medication so your doctor can better treat you. I look forward to hearing about your progress. :Hug_emoticon:

Hi Sara

It sounds as though you have been preyed upon by some pretty vile people from a young age, with your mother enabling it to happen, instead of protecting you as she was supposed to.

As kids we are incredibly vulnerable, and there are so many twisted, corrupted opportunists in the world that will happily inflict their toxicity on children and adolescents. Our parents should be the main barrier protecting us from this. You got a pretty raw deal, with a mother who sounds as though she never really developed enough to give you the nurturing and protection that you should have had.

Some people get shat on from the day that they're born, and they allow it to twist their personalities. They become cruel, hard, and transfer their pain onto more vulnerable people. Maybe this was the case with your mother. Other people buck against the trend and actually come out the other end with greater compassion. They discover that they can nurture themselves by helping other people.

As devastated as you're feeling. You can take comfort in knowing that you're not like the people who have abused you throughout your life. You're better than your mother, her partners, and the degenerate who raped you. By choosing not to inflict harm on other people – you set yourself apart from them.

You may have been the victim of abuse, but at least you yourself are not a child abuser, or a rapist.

People will abandon you – I think that’s just the nature of PTSD. I know first hand how the loss of a relationship can be the final straw that pushes you over the edge. My PTSD is the consequence of trusting and getting close to people who were not trustworthy. People who appeared to be friends, but manipulated and deceived me – gradually dragging me down.

Be careful who you trust. You are vulnerable, and as I’m sure you realise, there’s plenty of people who will take advantage of that. The only person you can truly rely on is yourself. Be forgiving of yourself, be kind to yourself, and be really cautious about who you let in. Be careful about how much you tell people about yourself. Giving people information about you, gives them power over you. Let people prove themselves to be (at least) semi-trustworthy before you give them your confidence.

That goes for doctors as well. A lot of them simply couldn’t give a shit. They’ll write you up for oxazepam; midazolam; temazepam; ****-azapem, send you on your way, and they think they’ve done their job. No doctor or psych will ever have the same investment in your wellbeing that you do. Responsibility for your health – for what does or does not go into your body ultimately rests with you. Medication does not work for everyone. Find someone who shows interest in your condition and does more than just hand you a prescription. Watch the sleeping tablets, if you get addicted to those, you’ll wish that you just had insomnia.

Keep enduring

Hi Supression fail,
I too did not have a good chilhood. And I know how difficult tit can be when you are abused by family. My mother is seriously emotionally abusive. I know how painfull it can be to be abused by the very people who are suppose to support you.
I also following sexual attack. About a 2 years ago split with boyfriend. Have gone into isolation don't see peoples. But I am looking to this changeing in the future.

Important that you have support. So get some.
I know what it is like to feel so disaciated and numb. I went through a grief period not so long ago to do with the deep pain having an abusive family caused me.

It is absolutely understandble that all this would be deeply painfull. But remember you deserve better. You are a beautifull diamond that deserves support, encouragement and love.

I too have fallen into periods of not eating. But please don't do this to yourself. Try to force yourself to eat something nutritional. Because it will only make the spaced out feeling worse. YOU have look after yourself.

Rest lots as this is a stressfull time.

Forget the abusive statements of your mother. I know how painfull that can be.
But know that you deserve the gratest care and give it to yourself.

Also don't do frienships from people who don't treat you witht the love and respect you deserve.
