My name is Tara O’Neill and I am a researcher at the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland. I would like to ask for your participation in a research study if you are a survivor of sexual trauma. The purpose of this study will be to investigate the effects of a broad range of traumatic events on later adult well-being. The research aims to promote the needs and interests of individual survivors and to improve service provision and responses to sexual violence and childhood sexual abuse.

The survey consists of several questions and requires approximately 20-30 minutes of your time. All your data will be treated as strictly confidential and analysed anonymously. You will not be asked to provide information that could be used to identify you. You can leave the survey at any point without giving reasons.

If you have any queries or questions please contact me at [email protected]

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Your input into this survey would be very helpful. If you are over 18 years old and wish to participate, click on the link below:

I took this survey and found it to be very interesting, a little involved but very worthwhile. It takes time and thot but is worth it I think. The listing of hotlines and resources at the end is extensive and very valuable i believe. I am glad to be a part of it. Thanks.

As a researcher myself, I jumped at the opportunity. This is definitely an important topic!!! Best of luck! The only problem I had was with the question what had happened to me and by whom. I was only able to click on one perpetrator, not several.

Thank you soo much anndeb for taking the time to read and complete my research and thank you for the comments made. Also, thank you to Deaf Global as you are certainly right this is as far as I am concerned the most important topic to help victims become survivors and to try to help people move forward in their lives. I agree with your comments about only being able to choose one perpetrator, it is not ideal and not flexible to include a number of perpetrators. This was the format of the questionnaire used and so, I couldn't ammend it but I fully agree with you and I will definitely take this on board for the future of this research and any other research I am involved in.

Thank you again, your contribution and comments are very much appreciated.

Kind regards
Tara

I was only able to click on one perpetrator, not several.

I actually ticked all that were applicable to me, can't remember how many I did, but as 3 attacks were all from different people; a stranger, someone I knew but wasn't a friend and a friend I'd grown up with. Hope that didn't mess up my survey:rolleyes:

This is so interesting... I wonder what happened and what changed... I got the most important info though, so I don't think the data will skew the results of the study. I can't wait to read the results at some point. It is along the same lines of research conducted in a lab in my department, I suspect that I will hear about them...Definitely important research, which will hopefully help lots of people, maybe even ourselves.

I was happy to fill out the survey, although my symptoms aren't as pronounced as they once were. I still feel like it was helpful for me to fill out the survey to help others but also to get a glimpse of how far I have come and where I may need to expend some energy. :)

Hi all,

I would just like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank you all for your interest and participation in my research. Without your valuable contribution this research would not be possible.
This project is due to finish on the 31st August so I’d like to ask anyone who has partially completed the questionnaire if you would like to fully complete it, you can delete cookies from your web browser and try again. Sites such as the site which this survey are on, store cookies on your computer to remember you, so if you clear them you'll be able to restart the survey. You may have also received an email to say your information has been saved, if you click on the link within the email it will take you back to where you left off, if you would still like to finish it off.

To anyone who has completed it and think they know of others who may be interested, please direct them to my research link. The more people I get, the stronger the case will be to promote the needs and interests of individual survivors and to improve service provision and responses to sexual violence and childhood sexual abuse.

To anyone who is new to my research, and you are interested in taking part, please follow the link above. Your participation and contribution would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks to you all.

Hi all,
I just wanted to extend my thanks and gratitude for taking an interest in and completing my survey. Without your contribution it wouldn't be possible to move forward and to help make a difference in this area.

Please tell others who may be interested in this research as the more people who complete it the more valid and accurate results will be meaning, provision will be improved and more people will actually understand the long term impact and implications of what you guys have had to go through.

Thank you
Tara

Lionheart, I agree, and taking the survey actually gives me some hope. When I just started therapy at age 20, I had the full gamet of problems. Taking anti-depressants increased a number of the very symptoms of PTSD mentioned on the survey (feeling unreal, feeling as if my body was not my own, hearing a male voice commenting on what was about to happen, which always ensued exactly as it said, and others). Getting off the Effexor, in fact even weaning down off of it, made those symptoms abate down to nothing within a week.

As I took the survey, and noticing I could mark "Not at all" for the last month or week on items that were devastatingly present in my twenties showed me that I've made some progress over the years. This gives me hope, as I said, that I could potentially see more progress and feel more "normal" with time. :)

Finally, I'd like to find a way to identify what was key to getting to this point and use it to help others. I hate to think of others with PTSD not getting any help. It's a sad state of affairs.

Hi all,

Now that the research period has ended I would just like to take the opportunity to sincerely thank you for your contribution and involvement in my study.

I cannot stress enough that is completely down to you that research such as this is possible to conduct. Without your most valuable contribution and participation we would not be able to progress in this area.

All of my data-research will only serve to help the needs of individual survivors of sexual abuse and to inform practise and provision in dealing with the issues in a manner that is both appropriate and useful for the individual.

When all my results have been collected and analysed I will send you on my findings and key conclusions as a way of thanking you once again for your participation.

If there is anything I can do to help you in the future or to provide you with any further details or information, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected].

Kindest regards and best wishes for the future.

Tara
