It sounds like you have a good father who is really trying to understand you. I think you see that in him too even though sometimes he might frustrate you, maybe.

I feel all the time when reading your posts and chat that you are a great person with lots of good qualities. I'm not sure of your past but maybe your thoughts are self doubting and anxious about being judged or misunderstood by others.

I feel you are really starting to understand yourself though, and that is all that matters in the end. :)

You can also google mindfulness meditation, which helps you be present. Healing from PTSD is a long process. I am halfway there, says my therapist, and I don't feel halfway anywhere. I just keep going to therapy, though, since I have gotten better. A good book is Radical Acceptance by Tara Brach. You ask really good questions.
 
Your dad sounds like he is trying to supportive, which is a good thing. It took my dad awhile to do that. He finally was after this last stay in a psych unit. It surprised the heck out of me, I thought he would judge me, instead he was compassionate.

Staying in the here and now is difficult to do, but it can be done. I wish you this ability.
