DIXIE. Not sure what it stands for but it was a giant fishing lure we towed behind the ship to....get this.....distract enemy submarines.

This is all fine and dandy if you yourself are not a 900ft ship that sounds like a giant dump truck. virtually the loudest thing in the ocean. "DIXIE is streaming!"....... "Great lets let everyone know we're out here"

Christ! The Aussies have a thesaurus! How come WE don't have a thesaurus? I mean this puts us at a direct disadvantage during conflict. Someone says something on the radio, they can immediately look it up in their thesaurus. We can't. We only reply Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.

We need a thesaurus!

Funny, It might actually be the same thing. Bunch of pots and pans being towed behind the ship. Hell of a racket.

They were a pain in the arse, we had to have them in our kit for some stupid reason, and they helped when we had the fitters and turners (Cooks, fit normal good food into a pot and turn it into shit) around, you got served your gruel into your dixie.

The worst part of that was noise discipline, so you will find nearly every single soldier has their handles all taped up so they don't clang and make a noise.

The only thing we towed behind the aircraft carrier was the "Killer Tomato". A florescent orange 6ft torpedo shaped aluminum float. They towed it 'bout a 100 yards behind the ship and the aircraft would use it as a target to simulate small boats. They weren't supposed to hit it, which would sink it, making it useless for other pilots. Occasionally some pilot would hit it. Then if it didn't snap the line bringing it in, they would take it to our shop to patch up/weld it back to usable status.

It's was cool to watch them shoot at it. I only watched it once (fantail was secured during live fire). An F/A 18 fired near it and as soon as it did, the nose climbed like crazy. Takes some skill to keep the nose down firing 4-6k rounds per minute. The shot in short bursts to control the nose climb.
