I think I'd like to try this as a grounding technique. The arts were never nurtured in me and consequently this is not an area I'm skilled in on any level. I'd like to see if I can recapture that aspect of my childhood.

I was about to purchase Johanna Basford's Secret Garden, but am afraid it may not be for beginners? Do you think it would be ok?

It doesn't matter what book or the level of the pictures. The idea is to just relax and "be a kid" for a while.

have friends that cross stitch - I would end up sticking that needle in my eye if I had to do it for more than 10 minutes.

Thanks @StellaBlue you made me laugh! I actually stopped by today because I'm trying art therapy for the first time and I'm panicking and can't figure out why. Your post help me to put things in perspective and put a smile on my face so thanks!

@SeaQuel
Can you hold a writing utensil? You'll be great at that book.
Don't worry about skill. This of course, all goes out the window if you're like me and coloring outside the lines a little completely freaks you out. Of course, my therapist actually said that he encourages me to color outside the lines since it's obviously something I struggle with. GAH
:O_o:
What a jerk. Let's not try to fix everything all at once, k?

My priest got me a small religious coloring book a few weeks ago. It's quite nice. I like the small size because I can finish a picture in one or a few settings unlike the larger books.

Funny reading this thread again. I actually did up buying a book (not the one I mentioned), but it's been sitting on my kitchen table, untouched, since then. One of these days!

Haha! I do this too with hobbies!
Scrap booking
Calligraphy
Embroidery
Sewing

You name it, I have kits brimming with brand new almost untouched tools for whichever obsession I developed that week to be discarded the next.

I heard about adult coloring last year, went out and got a couple and some quality pencils.

These books are now full of half complete pictures given up on because I went out of the line somewhere, messed up a pattern I had in mind with colors, didn't look exactly the way i imagined or colored one way in one section and another in a different one.

Turns out I'm ocd when it comes to coloring and the destress idea i had in mind just stressed me the hell out!!

I just purchased my first adult coloring book tonight while shopping for groceries! I am so looking forward to using it and getting creative with the intricate designs. I've also heard this activity is a great stress reliever and allows for someone to get into a "flow". :)
