Anyone Know Biochemistry? A Question About Ethylene Glycol Poisoning

I know that there are a few people working in the field of medicine and science here. Right now, I am struggling with the research paper about the ethylene glycol toxicity.
Can anyone explian me clearly the relationship between metabolic acidosis from glycolate accumulation and lactate production, and an anion gap? If you can give links to useful reading, it will be helpful, too.

All I know is that it will shut the kidneys down. Sorry, know that's not much help.
