shadowcaster - I've been familiar with dreamcatchers for a long time. In high school my best friend was Maori (native New Zealander). He bought me one for my bday and it hung above my bed (for obvious reasons). I'd never quite met anyone like him before and we were a serious mismatch and a puzzle to everyone ('what's the rebel doin' hanging with the mouse?'). Very cool :)

I didn't know the Maori had dream catchers. I was taught that it is something unique to the Americas starting with the legends of Nokomis

May well have been, but he was a pretty spiritual guy despite his 'reputation'. I'd never met anyone like him. We had some good times. We also had some rebellious times. Dreamcatchers just remind me of him. In a good way. Definitely a person who makes my 'greatest influences' list.

this is the version I was taught

"A spider was quietly spinning his web in his own space. It was beside the sleeping space of Nokomis, the grandmother.

Each day, Nokomis watched the spider at work, quietly spinning away. One day as she was watching him, her grandson came in. "Nokomis-iya!" he shouted, glancing at the spider. He stomped over to the spider, picked up a shoe and went to hit it.

"No-keegwa," the old lady whispered, "don't hurt him."

"Nokomis, why do you protect the spider?" asked the little boy.

The old lady smiled, but did not answer. When the boy left, the spider went to the old woman and thanked her for saving his life.

He said to her, "For many days you have watched me spin and weave my web. You have admired my work. In return for saving my life, I will give you a gift." He smiled his special spider smile and moved away, spinning as he went.

Soon the moon glistened on a magical silvery web moving gently in the window. "See how I spin?" he said. "See and learn, for each web will snare bad dreams. Only good dreams will go through the small hole. This is my gift to you. Use it so that only good dreams will be remembered. The bad dreams will become hopelessly entangled in the web."

Years ago I had reason to travel to the Black Hills in South Dakota for 3 weeks out of the year. Alot of the people there are Lakota, and I must say I never felt so welcome anywhere in all my life...just a very accepting religion and people. I got to witness an aquaintance recieve his eagle feather (for an unknown deed) and it was a really important moment for him. I did a painting for his wife while I was there and in tern she made me a leather shield...I still have that prominently displayed to this day.

I like the way you have the feathers radiating from that dreamcatcher...very artistic!
