Two cents, I participate in art therapy (or, as I like to put it on the schedule that I turn in to my boss, "Expression and Conjecture") and when it works, it absolutely works.
For me, it activates a completely different part of my psyche and I no longer feel like 'that guy with the messed up brain'. It allows me to escape, unknowingly, to a place where I can relax, forget, and just be.
The group I participate in has a LCSW and a psychologist who attempt to bring things together at the end (analyze and tease out meaning from our day's work). Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't - but it feels like magic when it does.
