Black veterans: I need your help
I will try to keep this short and sweet, as I suffer from PTSD and tend to get annoyed if things take longer than I think they should. I am currently working on an Action Research (AR) project for my Master's thesis that deals with increasing treatment initiation among Black veterans with PTSD. I am specifically addressing racism as one of the root causes that serve as a barrier to treatment. I chose this topic because I have had some very negative and unfortunate experiences that have caused me to basically seek alternative treatments, (not street drug related, mind you, just alternative).
I'm interested in knowing how many more of you feel that racism played any part in your reluctance to seek treatment through the VA, and if so, to what extent? I'm interested in your personal experiences with any and everyone that was involved with your particular case, how it made you feel, if the way you were treated had any bearing on your decision to move forward with or decline mental health treatment from the VA.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation. I am hoping that this project can help point those who are so inclined to make better choices in regards to how Black veterans are treated. I feel that even if I can't provide solutions, I can at least offer some relevant and helpful suggestions.
