Oh please God, not Lord of the Rings. H is a huge fan and I mean long before the movies. We have been married for 32 years and he has read it at least once a year in addition to listening to the audio tapes and music.
LOL I really like Lord of the Rings, but I can only read books once then I'm done. Someone tried to get me to read the Hobit (was supposed to have occurred before LOTR), I couldn't get into that one. Then my ex would play the audio book on road trips...for some reason I cannot follow an audio book to save my life.

I'm for KP's suggestion, Dark Materials Trilogy. It sounds interesting.

I actually fancy the Philip Pullman Dark Materials series.

I absolutely love Lord of the Rings but have read them all (plus the Hobbit and The Silmarillion) over and over and over! I would recommend that if anyone hasn't read LOTR they read The Hobbit first as it is connected.

As for Song of Ice and Fire by George R R Martin. There are 5 books in this series with two more on the way. The TV series is called game of Thrones on HBO. These are my favourite books ever!! The plots are complex and interwoven. The bad guys often win and the good guys often loose. You can't always tell who is good and who is bad. The world, although fantasy, is very realistic; and although it is set in a world of swords and shields, dragons and the walking dead, the politics and people are so like our own world today. They are incredibly well written. Knocks LOTR off the shelf!

The characters are believable, funny, cruel, sweet , powerful. There is a lot of sex and violence (but not as much as HBO put in:rolleyes:). I highly recommend these books to anyone but they are a long read.

Ok... so are we all agreed then to read "His Dark Materials Trilogy" which comprises books - Northern Lights - Subtle Knife - Amber Spyglass?

We can even start three series if you want, i.e.
  1. His Dark Materials Trilogy
  2. Game of Thrones
  3. ??????
That gives everyone some genre to be within and discuss, if one series doesn't suit them.

Little off the subject here, like KP I just bought myself a Amazon Kindle Keyboard Wi-Fi 6 inch E-Reader online at a bargain price. The e-book Warhorse can be bought from Amazon for $6. Very pleased with this purchase for several reasons.

Can't afford to buy all these books on a pension.
A lot of books are too heavy for me hold. :inpain:
Turning the pages with my fingers is becoming difficult. :inpain:
This Kindle holds 3,500 books and has many other features. ;)

I know we start reading on the 4th of September so I may be a few days late with starting. Waiting on delivery.

Yer, I will get myself one eventually, as Kindle on the iPad is too heavy compared to a kindle itself, being light as a feather. Most of the kindle books are the same, and even more, than buying it in paperback from book depository. Amazon a bit pricy nowadays IMHO... especially for the kindle version.

Amazon remind me of buying movies via Apple... you can typically buy the movie after a few weeks in your local store for half the initial sale price, so $10 or so after the initial rush. Apple... years later, still selling the electronic version at full price versus going and buying it on DVD for a couple of dollars.

They come up with great ways to deliver products, yet then they screw themselves over in the process by trying to rip customer off too much.

Anthony, have you tried graysonline.com.au. They sell the Amazon Kindle for $99 plus 9.95 for delivery. At BigW it costs 219 for the same one. This Kindle has the audio reading function and a keypad at the bottom. Graysonline are reputable and replace goods if no faulty. I have been using them for many years.
