Welcome. Once all the new range are out of "Pre-Order" then anyone, anywhere, will be able to buy those direct from Amazon US. You just can't whilst in pre-order, thus you get a "cannot have it" type of page at present.

I can buy the basic Kindle cheaper from Amazon US than I can from some stores in Australia right now. It is silly.

Are you sure? I have found several Germans (including a good friend of mine) who said they found out that (literally) non-US buyers can not order the Kindle (Paperwhite, that is) from amazon.com.

Anyway, I checked into that "buy yourself a US address" thing and I'm amazed that exists! They charge around 45 USD for delivery... :( But I might do it anyways. :) Thanks for the info! Never knew such a thing existed!

Yes, I'm sure. Nobody can order it unless in the US "at present" because it isn't available yet. You can only pre-order it, and you MUST be in the US to pre-order.

The "available" kindle products, being only two, you can order anywhere in the world from Amazon.com. The Kindle Fire range is not available yet, only accepting US pre-orders, nor is the Paperwhite.

I am in Australia, and cannot order the Paperwhite right now for the same reasons. If I switch to a US address, it lets me pre-order.

Once Paperwhite is actually available for shipping, the site will allow you to order it via the International Amazon.com method. It will only allow you to order the "no-advertisment" version. So the more expensive, because the ads are US based, thus useless outside of the USA.

I looked at the two available, chose Germany, and it let me continue. So there is no reason why the Paperwhite won't be the same, ONCE released.

Just wait until it comes out first, then order it.

Will do so! Thank you! When I order from the US, I'd take the no-advertisement version anyway. I really hate advertisement. So distracting!

By the way, the new Kindle Fires were released here already on 12 Sep!

If I need something out of the US, having friends inside the country, I send them the $$$ via paypal, they buy it, receive it, then forward it. That's an even cheaper way than third party service postage rates.

The Kindle Fires I would expect to be different, per country, because the content providers will vary. For example, the buying a Kindle Fire from the US, to use in Australia, would be useless as those providers are not the providers here. I suspect the Fire range would only ever be available within select countries that have specific digital content delivery partners with either Amazon, or approved by Amazon to provide the licensing to users.

Yep, was just reading about the Kindle Fires use in Australia: "What works perfectly in Australia? books, audiobooks, music, surf the web, run apps * and watch movies / tv shows *. Apps and movies have to be loaded into the Kindle fire via the USB cable."

There is no service provider in Australia licensed with Amazon to provide the movies and music. So its just a tablet pretty much, which there is a flood of those already.

I noticed they've also discontinued the Kindle Touch for this new Paperwhite. Will be interesting.

When you order from amazon.com or when you ask a friend to send it to you from the US, do you have to pay customs fees for importing a Kindle? I have no one in the US I could ask to send it, so if I buy myself a US address, would they forward the Kindle as a private package? Found no info on this on their webpage, only that they do re-pack. (But maybe that already is the answer?)

I ordered three books on 9/11 a year after and had to pay almost the same amount they cost for customs. I needed those books for uni so I had not much of a choice, but for a Kindle customs fees may well be higher than for books...

Ok, had to step up my game on these new Kindle Paperwhites, and getting my order in from a friend in the US, because they get released on Oct 1, yet that batch are already completely sold out. The next batch is late Oct already... so I don't want to be waiting for mine to come in until November... so getting my order in now so I don't wait around until next year.

A very popular item it seems... something a lot of people have been waiting for with Kindle. I worked out the reading time based on their projections, being around 28hrs straight with the light at mid lighting, let alone 8 weeks standby. Impressive to say the least.

The best thing is that these are USB devices. So buy the Apple USB charger, which we have plenty off already, and got a wall charger. Whoo hop.

I want one but I've got no £££ yet so I'll just have to wait.

I'm enjoying the Hunger Games and I'm on the last book before starting His Dark materials. This book club is making me into an even bigger book worm than I already was!

I loving my Kindle. I'm allowing myself to buy one book per month and for the rest of the time I'm downloading free books. There is a good range of free books - just not the very popular authors. One thing about it though is that I forget what the book, author is called as I don't see the cover everytime I pick it up to read - but that is just my mind :bookworm:.

Choosing free books is also making me choose things I wouldn't otherwise read.
