Subject: Forced marriages
I was seven when I last saw my mum. She was off to India with my grandma for a family wedding. I wanted to go too but they wouldn’t let me. My last memory is watching her walk out of the house. She would never come back and it would be nine years before I understood the real reason why: my grandma and dad had arranged to have her murdered out there.
My mum was killed because she wanted to leave her unhappy marriage. She was expected to act like a “traditional” wife, waiting on everyone hand and foot. But she wanted her independence, to wear western clothes and have a job. She was killed for wanting her freedom.
There are too many women in Britain who are victims of honour violence -- violence inflicted to stop a woman from having independence and for bringing “shame” to the family. They are locked away and treated like slaves.They fear for their lives, and are intimidated, attacked, and forced into marriages against their will. In the worst cases, like my mum, they are killed and erased from family history.That’s why I want a national day to remember these women.

David Cameron has said he wants to put an end to honour-based violence and is holding a summit in July to address the problem in the UK. This is an opportunity to show he is serious and mark a national day for Britain’s Lost Women. It would encourage those who are suffering to reach out and tell somebody – to get help before we lose them too.It will be the first step to stopping this brutality in our society.
If there had been more awareness then maybe mum would have known where to go to for help when she wanted to leave my dad.
