This was a typical day of life in my household. As I was always and forever the go-to for store errands and everything else that nobody else wanted to do or get involved with.
Dad always had a list as long as his arm and leg combined, but would never give me the complete list so I could get it all in one swoop. Instead, it was always just 1 item at a time
It always started with a pack of cigarettes, which he smoked 3 packs a day, but never, ever bought by himself, and never, ever more than 1 pack at a time.
Because of his atomic temper, protesting was never an option.
1. Pack of smokes -1st trip to the store
2. Toilet paper - another trip to the store
3. A pound of butter - another trip to the store
4. A loaf of bread - another trip to the store
4. A pack of lunch meat - another trip to the store
5. A quart of milk - another trip to the store
6. A pound of coffee - another trip to the store
7. A package of orange pekoe tea - another trip to the store
8. A bag of sugar - another trip to the store
9. A box of cookies - another trip to the store
10. A box of crackers - another trip to the store
11. A can of soup - another trip to the store
12. A can of beans - another trip to the store
13. A dozen eggs - another trip to the store
14. A jar of jam - another trip to the store
15. Another pack of cigarettes - another trip to the store
16... I've lost count by now
It would go on and on all day, meanwhile I lived with the embarrassment of showing up at the store every 15 minutes or so, this being just one contribution to the shame I lived with every minute of every day.
I would have liked to know what possessed Dad to be so cruel.
