Well folks, just add another diagnosis on the long list of things wrong with me. I would like to get advice from you all about how to tell if a specific food is high or low glycemic value. Also, please tell me your experiences with the combination of PTSD and diabetes. Am I going to be even more of a lovely bitch when my sugar drops? I am sad, scared, etc. but I can't binge this time, unless I binge on celery.
Does Ben & Jerry's come in vegetable flavor?

Diabetes is very dangerous. I'm so sorry you are having to deal with this, and I urge you to closely monitor it and get it under control.

There's a few good websites and books out there that have info on high and low glycemic foods. Do a google and I"m sure you'll find a ton of information.

Also, my advice, stick with whole grains, veges, stay away from real sweet fruit, quality proteins...........and yes, no ben and jerrys. I think even carrots are considered pretty high glycemic.

Good luck, my thought are with you.

Hi 2quilt

There are some brilliant web site that explain all sorts of stuff. Like Tlight says, if you google for any of the things you want to know, there will be loads of different site come up. there are also a lot with some stunning recipes on them.

I am not diabetic myself, but did a search for someone else a few months ago. I was amazed at the recipes for stuff you would not dream of being able to eat.

I hope you can find what you are looking for, a bit of advice though, please be careful with the artificial sweeteners as some of them could cause issues with your ptsd.

Well the safe things are Veggies, beans, apples, and very lean meat....fruit is ok, but only in moderation, as it can spike your sugar. You will need to stay away from anything WHITE!!!! No white bread, pasta, sugar, white potatoes.....Replace them with Whole wheat bread and pasta, Sweet potatoes, and Stevia in place of sugar.....

Depending on how bad your sugar is, if you are on insulin or just Glucophage, Metformin, or another oral medication, will basically be the tell all as to how strict you should monitor your diet. Diabetes is serious, and can lead to a whole host of other issues, so you should be fairly strict about your diet.......

Make sure that you always carry with you some hard candy, just in case your sugar drops suddenly, and you become Hypoglycemic.....You don't want to be in a store and pass out, like I have... No, I am not diabetic, but I am Hypoglycemic......

Hang in there, and be good to yourself......

Sorry to hear you added one more thing to your list, hon. I'm like Wendy...not a diabetic, but I'm hypoglycemic and I find that if I eat 4-5 small meals (more like snacks) throughout the day it helps to keep my sugar regulated. I pack my lunch box for work with things I know I can eat keep things going good. BTW-I know you said you are dieting, not sure if you're exercising, too. One thing to remember is that exercise will lower your blood surgar. Good if it's too high, not so good if it's low. You might want to check with your doctor or dietician, but I do know that protein will help levelize blood sugar (for us with low blood sugar). Not sure if it's bad with too high.

I remember years and years ago my oldest daughter had a babysitter with diabetes and she went to the library and got cookbooks and learned to redo her favorite recipes. You might want to try that. That way you have familiary, comfortable food that's better for you.

Oh and please, please, please check yourself with the blood meter several times a day. Especially before eating. I have a friend with diabetes and hers is very well controlled but she stays on top of it and makes sure that her diet meets what her body needs. My old boss had it, too and would only check his blood when he remembered, he ate what he wanted (the only person I've ever known who put salt on fried chicken) and figured the pills from his doctor gave him a free pass to keep living like he always had. His health was in the dumper because of it, but he'd never admit it.

Hugs and I'm sorry life threw another curve at you.

BTW, I do know someone that is diabetic, and was on I think 3 different meds to control it, UNTIL......She decided to take things into her own hands, and she went on a very strict diet. She NEVER wavers off of it, and her blood sugar is now normal, and she is OFF ALL meds...Even her Cholesterol has gone way down, and is almost to normal.....She also exercises, by swimming everyday, and she will walk a few days a week, maybe a mile.....If she can do this, you can....BTW, she just turned 80 last week......

It took me ten-15 yrs to get this obese, because I have yet another disease where my joints hurt so bad I cant exercise. Very painful.
Ever feel like you got run over by a truck, after say, apartment moving day or exercizing too hard? I feel like that daily. i cant exercise. I am on pain meds and an antidepressant that kills pain.

I am a veggie hater, they all taste bitter, I didn't reproduce, so I just might be an example of natural selection.

Well, how about swimming??? Do you think that will affect how you feel?? It's really low impact. As far as hating veggies... Well, they say that you can change your taste by just eating something till you like it. I HATED beans......I didn't eat a bean for maybe 50 years, I HATED them, would gag, even thinking about them....Then money became an issue a few years ago, and I had to learn to eat them, or go hungry. They are cheap, and full of protein.....I LOVE beans now, my favorite is chic peas(garbanzo), but I also like black beans too...

So, I suggest that you might want to learn to like veggies, or you may just have another issue....Being hungry!!!!!!
