I had some formative teenage years in Arkansas. The population there is heavily armed and "going shooting" was an activity that friends would do. I learned there to use firearms and to respect them.
There were two separate instances while I was there, one when I was 15 and the other when I was 16, that I wished I had had a firearm to protect myself. By the time I was 17, I carried a gun in my purse to school and to work. I was not going to be harmed in those ways again.
I moved to California at 17, a state that is very anti-gun. But, I had retained my learned philosophy that "it's better to be judged by twelve than carried out by six". The gun in my pocket gave me confidence. I moved back to Arkansas again in my early 20's. I stayed for awhile, but my family is here in California.
I carried a gun regularly throughout my life. It was only since I had my children that I have put the gun locks on and stored them in the gun safe. When I go on trips to the desert by myself, you can be sure I am armed. I don't think that I would be viewed as an easy target, because of the confidence I feel when I know I will not allow anyone to rape me again.
