Had to quit...when undergoing 3 years of reconstructive surgery (maxillofacial and others).

I was so frustrated. I missed smoking so badly. I would try to do it between surgeries, but it just tasted...disgusting. So I quit. Saved me a bunch of money annually though because I only smoked clove cigarettes.

Actually Did Quit Smoking, 3 months 9 days ago

I have just been doing the nicotine "gum", and still fighting cravings very badly. For some reason, every time I "quit" smoking, I have a dramatic increase in number and severity of panic attacks and anxiety in general.

I voted no, but I did smoke, for 37 years, off and on again. I have had some pretty bad anxiety flare-ups since I quit, causing me to start to see a counselor, who says I do have PTSD. So that explained a lot to me, about why I am the way I am.

I didn't answer the poll because I used to smoke (cigarettes) socially and no answer fits that.

I smoke, tried quitting a few times, and I will definitely try again one day soon. My ex-bf who is the sufferer used to smoke pretty heavily and quit cold turkey 4 years ago ! I am in awe..because this was one of his lowest period with his PTSD. I am amazed that he was able to quit !

I have smoked for about eleven years, maybe more. Up to two packs a day. I am not trying to quit, because for the most part, I don't have any desire to. When I do finally decide that I would be better off not smoking, I'll give it a shot. But until then, I don't see it happening.

Please Clarify

Smoke what? Cigarettes? No. Drugs? No. Expensive cigars? Yes.
I have been fortunate and work part time as a consultant and expert witness in automotive litigation. This has enabled me to enjoy fine cigars and expensive single malts. Since I enjoy in moderation my doctors don't have a problem with either one.
JMO but if one has PTSD something thats legal and can enable that person to unwind and relax is a good thing.

Do you smoke cigarettes, or have you in the past? How do you think this influences your flashbacks/other PTSD symptoms, if at all?

I'm curious because a research study I'm looking to start conducting involves looking at the experience of a traumatic event (not necessarily in people with PTSD, but just in the population in general), and what relationship (if any) exists between this experience and smoking later in life. I thought I'd just ask to get a preliminary sense of where everyone on here is at in regards to this.
