Do You Tell People You Have Ptsd?

I have changed my way of thinking and only tell now on a need-to-know basis only and then there is only so much detail I will give others. This has been a learning process for me and I have been way too open!

Now too many people know my personal business and I am not comfortable with it any longer. Too many people are telling my story for me!

I prefer to say that I was traumatized and leave it at that unless it is a trusted therapist, a very close significant other, or to help out a trauma survivor.

I've had PTSD 12 years now. I usually test people on topics other than PTSD to see how they respond. Are they compassionate about depression? Have they mentioned family members with mental illnesses? I have shared my diagnosis with a few, select people, both at work and in social circles. But those people are specially selected and must be counted on to keep it secret. To know I have some understanding people in my corner helps with my anxiety symptoms. But I would never make an announcement about it to a bunch of people. I don't ever need to hear again that I just need to "get over it".
