Ask him for his official DD-214, what his MOS-AIT was it should be a number followed by a letter if he had been there 14 years. I have heard similar stories of "prolonged active duty," when it has come down to jail or prison time when they cannot make an accurate accounting for the lost years. You can also ask him where he did boot-camp then where he attended his advanced individual training or military occupational training.
