Does Anyone Else Have A Strict Religious Parent In Their Past?

just me here

I am just wondering, does anyone else have a controling, overbearing religious parent in their history? I was exposed to a very strict religion at the age of 11 by a stepparent.

They sent me to a school where the majority of the kids were also rejecting the efforts of a parent to force them into compliance. Some kids had been in the religion all of their lives and had no problem following the rules, no matter how strict. The rest of us were more like me and speaking for myself, I fealt oppressed and un-loved, humiliated and criticised, an outsider in what had been my home, an unwanted intruder at my new school and the focus of ridicule at my new church.

An interesting thing about that school, we had 17 kids in the 6th grade and 4 were in prison for long sentences by the age of twenty, one was killed while working prostitution, and half suffered from drug addiction at one time or another.

Sadly, I would say most of us threw any moral compass we had out when we threw out the religion. .

Thats my glancing blow with religion, and through EMDR I have come to realise how much of my life is affected by the three years I was exposed to the extremes of that religion.

I have purposely avoided naming the faith here, I think if I named it I might hit some sore nerves or insult some beleivers, I would suggest that anyone that responds to this should do the same..........but I wonder, how many people suffered long term emotional abuse at the hands of an overly zealous religious parent? How many think it started them on a path leading to CPTSD?

I grew up as a Jehovah's Witness until the age of 6 when my parents were disfellowshiped. However over half my family is still in the religion. I have no problems naming it because it's not nessicarly the religion that is an issue but the people interupiting it for their own behaviour.

I went from a hard-core, no outsiders, religion to nothing overnight and then had to deal with levels of bullshit that is just unreal, as my family fought. (attempted kidnappings in the name of god etc.)

It definately deeply affected me. I had complex trauma before the age of 6 (c-ptsd is not a valid diagnosis) so I can't say that it lead me to it but it heaped on more crap on an already huge pile.

P.S. Where the hell did spell check go for moxilla?
