Does Correcting Your Grammar Cause You Stress When Using This Forum?

I have removed the poll from this thread, as you do not get to run polls on forum rules and policies. The rules are very clear and they exist for very good reasons. You can question about rules, but you do not have the right to challenge them and create such a fuss over it. As stated... your choices are simple. You either comply to this forums rules or you use another forum that doesn't have as strict a rules. Simple, easy, choice is an individual one.

The rules of this forum do not bend to any member, you either conform or you don't. End of discussion.

No problem. I was just interested in how people feel about it really. I think I did perhaps create abit of a fuss last night and I didn't intend that. I was just venting about it. I think that because i'm a business owner, i'm not into compliance, i'm into doing what makes most business sense. I've never been of employee mentally- you do as i say "etc", and i've always found it hard to just deal with the rules when they seem conformist for conformist sake.

I do understand that is the way it is here. I guess this place just brings out my inner child and rebel. To be honest the only establishments that used to do that were school and when I was an employee of a company with rigid nonsensical procedures. I think it does make people fear expressing themselves on the forum. Again I can see the reason for the rules, but something is definately lost here by doing this in my view.

I haven't been on the forum long enough to make a real evaluation though, this was just my initial judgement. Human beings being reactive in nature, I figure i'm a human being caperble of feeling this way, perhaps someone else is. I'm sure that if like you say the community are happy with the grammar rules, they would be happy to explain why etc and what makes it so comfortable for them. I am starting to appreciate some of the comments that have been written regarding this.

As Ambience has been good enough to put her age and where about in the world she's from I'd like to offer something in the way of possible background to this problem. My kid's are 21 and 24, over here in the UK the mobile phone is like the new god and there is a new language that goes with it "text slang" this also carries over to emails. Many times me or my wife have received messages that we can't decipher between us and have to phone to ask what the message is about.
Text's are cheaper than calls plus they usually have so many free text each month to use up. Most of the young can write then send text messages just using their thumb and they don't use capitals. So I can understand the frustration when someone used to this form of expression bangs out a post then realises they have to go back through it capitalizing all the i's.

I must admit that this would be such a minor irritation that I could easily put up with, as I could still understand what was being said. But generally I like the fact that this forum is strict about the rule's and I particularly like the fact that all new members have to go through a period of moderation before being let loose all over the place.

Oh and Ambience I won't go on about how late at night you were on here, but had to chuckle at " After a few more Vodkas, I feel composed. "
Yep, up late had a drink the perfect time for rational discussion and not upsetting anybody!

Take it easy.
Jesta

Hi Jesta,

Gosh yes to be honest, in the soba light of day things look slightly different. I probably wouldn't have come in here like a bull dozer with my views. I think i've lacked abit of tact perhaps. I was panicking alot last night and really angry as something triggered me and I just set off into this negative spiral and I had no trouble venting things that had been bugging me when I came to the forum at that time. A little irrational outburst maybe, especially to get so upset at something so trivial as grammar!! Wow I shock myself sometimes.

Yes had a view vodkas, broke of in the middle of a party to come upstairs and chat as I had to get some space. Glad to hear that you are happy with the procedures in place. I'm glad to know they do help some people rather than hinder. It was quite a significant irritation for me last night because i type quickly when i'm stressed. I guess that's a better way of putting it. I appreciate everyone isn't going to just to change things that irritate me. I just wanted to know if I was a minority or majority and if this was effecting others or just me.

Rules affect everyone. Some get pissed off about capitalising thread titles, others not. Some grammar, others not. Some links, others not. The list goes on and on. This is why the rules are not up for debate, because they are a constant, they have been debated in the first place in order to be executed here, and the rules now form the foundation for why this forum succeeds over others... and that is primarily due to its readable for the traumatic brain because to be part of this community, you must conform to thinking beyond yourself and what others require as well. There are more readers than participators here, and they read because the content is forced to meet basic grammar rules. Doing this has also allowed us to easily implement language integration, as near enough to precise English will translate to other languages, thus help other people in the world, beyond just what any individual may want for themselves. This community has always been about the bigger picture, and will continue to always be that way. There are lots of PTSD forums, none though off this magnitude and for the simple reasons of how this forum has accomplished things as a community, and not as individuals.

I would like to add to Jestadud's comments on the capitalization of "I". I'm an English teacher in the US, and I have noticed in my students' work that they no longer capitalize "I" or the beginning of sentences. I finally asked my classes about it, and they thought it was a result of both texting and computer word processors. Jestadud explained the texting. As to the first words in sentences, word processors automatically capitalize words after periods and the letter "I" unless you turn off the autoformatting. So, more and more people are just assuming the computer will take care of those "details" whenever they type. Of course, if you're not using a word processing program with autoformatting, the result is odd capitalization errors for those of us "old-schoolers" as my students call me.

I don't know if this is always true, but it really made sense to me. I hardly know any phone numbers anymore because they're all programmed for quick dial or on the contacts list. Ah, technology.
