Does Ptsd Even Exsit, Is It Real, Or Do We Just Imagine It?

Coffee is a miracle! It's okay I understood what you were saying. I researched it a lot tonight and this morning. They were very interesting reads.

PTSD is both a physiological and psychological injury. Therapists and counsellors help heal the psychological insults and aid us in acquiring skills to keep those symptoms under control ("function") from day to day, science is looking for answers to the physiological component.

We can reduce the impact that the psychological impacts have on us but we must accept that underlying those symptoms are real physiological reactions which are going to persist, in some form. If you can accept the concept of neuroplasticity you can accept that the impact of the physiological components need not be permanent or devastatingly impairing, thus create a hopeful outlook and only aid in your psychological functioning.

For me, the physiological reactions that I keep experiencing are the "true PTSD" symptoms and the rest is just me reacting to them and nothing more. If you simplify it that much, you can see how one can actually come to give credence to the "just get over it" perception. Truly "getting over it" is far more complex than just that.

Honestly I cant stand a large portion of the touchy feel good group hug stuff that happens in here.

Yeah, a lot of the warm fuzzy hits me wrong too, but like it or not the people here mean well. I would go to the combat PTSD forum but I am not a vet. I have seen some horrible things as an EMT/firefighter but I got to go home and sleep in my own bed that night, no threat of IED's on the way back.

This is a great place for sharing experiences and suggestions and support, get an on board spell check like Grammarly and you can post like you were paying attention in English class.

If you think about it, almost every mental illness categorization is arbitrary so we as humans define it. If you look at other cultures, categorizations tend to vary a bit even outside of the DSM and ICD. It's quite interesting to look at mental illness through a cross-cultural perspective.

Judging by the way its effecting me I'd say it's pretty damn real. Also I think PTSD interferes with coping abilities so that is probably why people with PTSD tend to struggle with that. I think as with any mental disorder there are probably genetic/biological factors as well as social and environmental factors that in combination cause it.

I mean to me PTSD seems to be the epitome of being unable to cope with stress, I realize that is not all it is but that is a pretty big part of it.

Thank you all for your great responses! This has helped me see things in different perspectives, and I think a holistic view of PTSD is going to be very beneficial.

Barberian, I am still trying to find a balance and a way to look at this without it being negative. That is why I sparked up this conversation and all this feedback has given me a lot to think about, which is great.

Sidebar... If you hate the touchy-feely stuff, stay out of the journals/diaries. It seems to be a heck of a lot more prevalent there, from the few I've read.

Mods....should the tags be modified? I don't consider "of" and "tags" to be relavant tags, know what I mean?
