One-third of women around the world have experienced physical or sexual violence at the hands of their intimate partners with consequences from post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression, to sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV. Now, in a new study in 29 low-income and middle-income countries, researchers have identified yet another serious health risk associated with intimate partner violence: smoking.

I agree with the study. I am a long term smoker and it does reduce stress. I am not motivated to quit yet. I went to a stop smoking class with my husband and could not quit smoking. I eventually quit with him for a year but a crises occurred in the family and I am right back to smoking again.

The public shaming of smokers only makes me feel anger. I understand the risks. My own brother died at a young age of lung cancer

It is extremely addictive and I wish I had never started smoking.

I dearly wish I had not started smoking.. Actually if I got to change one and only one thing in my past, that would probably be it... Sheesh... the things you do when you're depressed and hopeless..

I honestly don't believe this is limited to DV victims... and in fact there have been an increase in smokers. It declined in numbers for years, and suddenly increasing again. From early findings it seems more based on the pressures of society today, this connectiveness we have of being always on, this 24hr availability, and basically we just aren't disconnecting and allowing ourselves to relax. Mental illness is increasing, anxiety disorders in general are going through the roof from societal stress, and well... it seems smoking is a really good anti-anxiety treatment. And to be perfectly honest, it is.

The worlds largest study on second hand smoke found there is actually no link to breathing in others cigarette smoke with any form of cancer or such smoking based illness, as has been cited time and again as a reason to ban smoking in public places. It seems they're only killing themselves, and not others, after all. Well... I would say that is more based on todays standards though versus the old standard of where smoking was allowed on airplanes and such isolated spaces. Not real sure if that would still fly under the newest study on this or not from such older smoking circumstances. Restaurants, bars, clubs, planes, so forth. Maybe the results are what they are now because for the last decade we've been removing it from public places. Questions???? Unknown questions????

Smoking is just really good for coping with anxiety. Especially compared to alcohol or other drugs, which will likely kill others due to your negligence versus just yourself with smoking cigarettes.

Thank you Anthony for the information and your opinion. It helped me so much.
