Party leaders have been quietly (or not so quietly) referring to them as brownshirts for awhile. Party officials can't say it, but others could. Trumpsters have responded with death threats. Because ya know, that really disproves the point. (Heavy sarcasm intended.)I watched him say this on Monday afternoon. My jaw almost dropped to see someone with this experience saying this.
The neverTrump delegates knew they were going to shut the mics off, and they were prepped for other much more aggressive efforts to silence them too. They expected that, but they didn't expect the RNC would be so in bed with the rule breaking. Not as far as it went. Again, the rules allow for a floor fight on many issues, and that's why so many actually go to these conventions.
I'm going to make two broad generalizations about the two parties - mostly about their leadership. Please know these are overly broad generalizations of party officials. They don't apply to all or even most members, but just the leadership as a general culture. This is also NOT a knock on either party, but my observation from being a delegate for both. Culturally, Republicans as a group of people tend to be very into rules, and following them, and not being even remotely mistaken for "rebel rousers." Democrat leaders are a little more tolerant of "rebellious" factions.
What the neverTrump delegates did at the RNC is a pretty big deal on a cultural level within the GOP because it was a little rebellious, but it was done following and using the rules.
That's kinda how republicans typically rebel against their leaders. It's all shifting with Trump...
The anger against Trump and the GOP grew at the convention. He threw all the rules out. It was going to be his way, period. No matter what the rules were.
One of the youngest GOP delegates messaged me right after all the chaos on the first day to say that the RNC under Trump's command was "not even following parliamentary procedure anymore!" This and many other delegates really did hope the RNC would keep Trump in check. The RNC didn't limit or control him, they enabled him. That's been a big eye opener for a few people. These delegates had already endured months of death threats, but strong arming wasn't from their own party officials.
But for me, I was like, yeah, um... you really expected him to follow parliamentary procedure after encouraging violence at state republican conventions?
They didn't expect that, but they hoped the RNC would make Trump follow the rules, and poured several million dollars and endless volunteer hours into their efforts to follow the rules to at least have a roll call vote at the convention. It's been eye opening for me to see the hope they put in the RNC following the rules.
but denial... ain't just a river in Egypt...*pounds head on wall*
