Hi again Suzanne, I believe in the right of the pacient to decide to go slower and is more, we always believe in EMDR that is better "less" than "too much"... Is better "slower" than "too fast". There is an important virtue a good therapist should have, doing EMDR or whatsever, and is called "attunement"...
So you can try and depend on how you handle it you should ask to dimish the frequency if the therapist herself wouldn't realize you need it.
Besides, the psychotherapist can suggest things, because she knows they can help a lot but if you are afraid this will push up your defences and this may convert in a "give and take" game...
Another point I wanted to share is that a complex trauma won't be processed in the same way as a simple one. With complex traumatized patients one needs to do a lot of grounding exercises during the session itself, because of the dissociation "danger", because the person's mind will run directly and fully to the past and than the dual attention principle isn't given and processing does not take place.
The sets of BLS can than be only a few seconds long and then stop and grounding. And then another few seconds and grounding and so on...
Until the person is able to tolerate his/her own affect.
Hope this helps.
