How often should one do EMDR, I am doing it once a week with a follow up of Stabilization/Empowerment session. Then someone told me EMDR should only be done once every two weeks as it takes that long for the body to process. What are your experiences, or thoughts?
 
I think it varies for each individual. Over time I am more attune to what I need. Sometimes I think it's just easier to plow through things if the time is right and the feelings are there. Other times, especially if there isn't followup in place it's better to take it slow. I typically know when I am ready to process large chunks. I've heard once a week, but that's not how my mind works. If things are triggered, then there is probably more to process, but you have to be ready for that. It kind of helps just to get through it, for me anyways.
 
Thanks, so it is ok to do once a a week. I have intense fall out but son't want to drag this out. My follow up of stabilizing and empowering sessions the same week help a lot.
 
How long Gia have you been doing EMDR?

I've done EMDR with 3 different therapists. First one did some over about a month and a half, helped a lot. The second one I went to for at least a year and it ended up doing more damage. Then, because my first experience was so good and I was referred I decided to give it one last try and have been going to my current therapist over two years. We do talk therapy part of the time, I tend to know know when I need to do EMDR.

She's great, but this process can be really tough. I'm glad I tried again, because it's really important to have a therapist that is a good fit and really hears you.

I think it's absolutely ok to do once a week. I get not wanting to drag it out, I'm the same way. I would just as soon plow through stuff so that I can move past it. If your life circumstances allow that, I would say go for it. Sometimes it helps to literally go until you can't go anymore. It's amazing to feel that weight lifted off.
 
I do Emdr twice a week. It is intense always beeing in the process. But it is also good since we emediatley pick up and work on what comes up after one session. And honestly its more intense in a scary way not doing it. At least now I know Im doing something constructive that is taking me closer to freedom.

But its different for everyone. I van "handle" Emdr twice a week. A friend of mine tried Emdr but could only handle Emdr when it was at least two weeks between them.
 
I think it just depends on you and what you're processing at the time. I've been doing EMDR for pretty much 5 months sometimes we do it twice a week depending on what comes up afterwards we might need a stabilizing talk session in between. The last 30 days a lot of horrible repressed memories have come back and dissociation has been really bad so therapist decided to purposely just do EMDR once a week and talk once a week. But again he always leaves it up to me. Whatever's happening at the moment. If we need to talk we talk if not we can do EMDR.
