Federal laws explicitly addressing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have overwhelmingly focused on the needs of military personnel and veterans, according to a new analysis. The study is the first to examine how public policy has been used to address psychological trauma and PTSD in the US, providing a glimpse of how lawmakers think about these issues.

Wonderful link for those who are civilian sufferers in the US. I remember well expressing to my T the complete lack of resources for civilian sufferers with this exception of these sorts of forums. She scoffed at the time, but the next session she apologized, saying she'd looked and I was right.

Additionally, at least in this country, the focus on veterans seems to have influenced public opinion to the point that the majority of those I've disclosed to have argued that I cannot have ptsd because I wasn't in combat.

Inevitably this leads to arguments with the general population who seem to want to think I just hate veterans. They point out how bad the VA system is, and I have no argument. But of course civilians don't have a publicly funded organization at all, and in private services for rehabilitation, service dogs, and general outreach for ptsd often then donors control who is accepted. In my experience the vast majority of those programs have been limited by their donors or by internal policy to only work with veterans.

Then you add the stigma of rape and childhood abuse and no one wants to go near the issue. And of course few people consider other sources of trauma. There's a lot of work to do. I just wonder who's going to do it and how.

It's a continuation of the misguided belief that evil is never in here, it's always somewhere OUT THERE. Nobody wants to believe that the effects felt from war can also be inflicted right here, sometimes in our own homes.
