I put in a complaint about a psychiatrist, who I had an intake with.

I am trying to find a new psychiatrist because my soon to be ex psychiatrist is retiring. I did an intake to see if I could be a private patient.

Anyway I went to see a psychiatrist who told me that she had not been a psychiatrist long and had only been working in the private sector for a short time.

She floated DID early on in the session, said my psychiatrist doesn't know how to do medication properly, didn't ask if I had medical issues that meant my medication is the way it is, when I said I have a terrible reaction to a certain class of drugs, said we will use a lower dose of drugs, (Ah no the reaction is life threatening), showed no empathy, didn't listen, when I said that's enough, pushed past and was fairly disrespectful. I wrote about it in my diary and I won't reread it as I don't want to go back through that. She had certain bigotry and prejudices which didn't make me feel comfortable. She said a couple of off the wall things. No trauma training at all.

I put in the complaint with the practice and asked for it to be forwarded to the practice manager.

I received a reply, so they were apologising in a, "we don't want to make ourselves legally liable way".

But an apology nonetheless.

It was intensely anxiety producing to write the complaint. It was important to write that complaint to stand up for myself.

I was also thinking best practice @Sideways. That people with mental health challenges deserve basic common decency and human rights, like anyone else.

Many folks are so distressed and/or unable to put in a complaint.

Given my experience in advocacy and my university degrees. I am uniquely placed to draw a line and give feedback and engage in a complaints process.

One complaint I wrote: 3,000 words and immaculately footnoted. The lecturer was impressed so that she requested to add it to her course content. I gave my consent.

A lot of the people talk about putting in a complaint and few do. I totally understand why they don't.

I do write complaints for folks when I think it can target policy, procedures or be seen by those who have institutional power.

Everyone's human rights matter.
