Feeling forced into EMDR

She just says that EMDR is gold standard treatment for trauma and the conversation doesn't really go far from there
It’s only one of several gold standard / Tier One treatments for PTSD.

EMDR is even strongly counter indicated for certain types of trauma, by the EMDR institute itself, if the practitioner has NOT gotten both their 2nd level of certification, AND gone onto specialized advanced trainings. The overwhelming majority of fully certified EMDR therapists have not even completed the 2nd level, much less specialized further training (in those certain trauma types).

You can go to the EMDR institute website and read yourself, about it.

It’s most commonly only therapists who have the most basic / lowest level of training (or are even still in training)… or people whose certifications were grandfathered in, when the new system was adopted, and haven’t kept current… who are acting like your T is acting. Which would personally make me doubly/triple (worried, isn’t exactly the right word? More like my “fact checking necessary” switch gets flipped).

I would very much suggest you ask them for their certification level, and further specialized training. But BEFORE doing so? Go to the website & familiarize yourself with what the governing body itself requires. I’ve met T’s who practice EMDR who aren’t even certified in it. The biggest tell I’ve run into one of those eedjits is the claim that there’s only 1 level. Even in the OLD system there were 2 levels. The updated system (applied over a decade ago) changed the requirements/prereq’s, organizing, & content structure AND added a 3rd “not level” as there are dozens of specialized further trainings. T’s who ARE certified? Usually keep those credentials right there in their office, and are thrilled to show you.

Learning to communicate effectively with our Ts is part of the healing process. It’s like a petrie dish where we get to try out skills that we’re not so crash hot on. Like the relational skills you’ve referred to, maybe having an effective conversation with your T about this would be a helpful part of the process for you.
Yes yes yes. Both things are part of your therapy.

You can't just do EMDR constantly - you will end up really screwed up.

The talk part is HUGE in therapy. So often I find I can''t see whats right in front of me....what would seem to be the blazingly obvious - without someone pointing it out - not just pointing it out but leading me on a road to self discovery.

Plus it points stuff out to my T. My t can read me like a book now. That? Is massively important for not getting to where I have trouble functioning because we open the next Pandoras box before we have dealt with the last one.

The thing to learn? Is when to say "lets dig in and work on stuff" and "I have enough EMDR stuff going on, I have stuff I need to understand".
