Every year, everybody makes these marvelous new years resolutions sometimes we relate them to recovery or other stuf. how about thinking of the new year as a goal setting time. Make a list of 12 goals one of every month. I'm working on that myself. I'm working on 12 goals that build upon another. For example in January I'm working on having gratitude for life. Then in February, I'm going to work on acceptance. The gratitude builds on top of the acceptance. I don't know about everyone else but every day can be about goal setting. Why start at a new year. Sometimes I have this I'll start tomorrow mindset. When I really can chose to start today.

I recommend goal setting rather than resolution setting in the new year. It's more helpful to recovery to take steps rather than leaps.

That is a GREAT!!!!! I am very proud of you! :)
I thiknk I will try this as well! Thanks! I hope it is okay if I steal this idea as my own.
Blessings to you!
Safe  if okay.

This sounds like a good idea.

I will think now of my twelve goals. In the past I have set resolutions but they never last more than a few months. This sounds more positive and achievable as I only need to set it to last for a month although that may not entirely be your ethos of this!

For example within the year I can give up smoking - for one month! Quite do- able!

Goals, they can be really great motivators I think, what a great topic for us to think about at least, and hopefully act on too..

My goal right now, to continue to develop good supportive relationships, reaching out to new people as they may come along as well. Loving people in my life have given me the most help in my journey to recovery so far or so it seems to me. They are models of behavior I want to achieve and teach me all manner of virtues, like patience and forgiveness..

And I hope I can help them in return..

I can't imagine setting a goal for every month, especially if the next goal leads on from the last. Too much pressure!

If I don't complete in January, then that sets February goal back, and March and April etc, etc.

No, I can't plan a whole years worth of goals - I just have to work at one at a time. My first goal is to find to a job.

There's a book I read once. I think it may be called "Give it Up" I will check for sure. This lady she gave up something for a month out of each year. For example: (January= coffee, February=dining out, March=shopping) My point is that you can do it only for a month or you can make it build upon each other. I will check on the book title and post it later if I figure it out.

To everyone else you can use my idea about the goal setting. That's why I posted it, so people have something as a tool for the new year.

Happy New Year Everyone!

Life is about progress not perfection. If we think about screwing up all the time it will get us no where. The beauty about goal setting is that it's about progress. If you set a resolution and you quit after 5 weeks in the gym it makes you feel horrible. Resolutions almost always fail for people. Goals can be set up with steps and goals don't happen over night. Even if it takes a person 30 days to do one thing it's fine. Goals shouldn't have huge amounts of pressure.

Last year I set a goal to pay off 5 debts in 2012. It took me until yesterday to pay off my final 5th debtor that I owed. Some goals take longer than others. The point of this post was to challenge people to set goals rather than resolutions. If it takes a whole year to complete a goal then so be it. We have to remember that goals take time. They work if we work them. They don't have to be complex goals.
