Google Glass-equipped Rifles Offer ‘mind-blowing’ Fire Superiority

Interesting and a logical progression. 'Smart' weapons will never replace 'smart' soldiers behind the weapons. Or until the battlefield becomes all 'mech' type weapons with people completely removed.

It takes real skill to hit a target at 500M let alone farther. To me the best weapons are still the ones that are in use and have stood the test of time; 45, AK-47, M-14. Simple, easy to use, accurate, still in use. Building more high tech weapons is what always happens but it's the one like I mentioned that will still be around when laser rifles become the standard on the battlefield. Just an opinion.

There is a lot of dependency in the armed forces now a days to use scopes of various types to enhance the precision and sights. It does help a lot I am sure. But I wonder if they are not becoming dependent upon those types of sights to create the rifleman of today.
Iron sights still need to be utilized and taught for marksmanship.
What happens when that fancy red dot or 4x scope breaks? And you know it happens...

For that matter do they still teach land navigation day/night without the use of GPS? that is such a critical knowledge to have.

I remember my underwater night navigation class. We didn't have GPS when I took that class. GPS was still a briefcase size computer. Hell our scrambled burst transmission radio had a fold up antenna that looked like a satellite dish...damn thing was SO heavy and delicate.

Good questions red! On my Super Match I have an ART scope, internal level, range finder out to 1200 yards and is set for 190 gr Sierra BTHP. It's set for zero at 1" high at 100 yds. My NM Iron sights are the same. When shooting at 1000 yds range, I mostly use the scope for ranging and shoot with the Iron sights....Good thing with my set up is no batteries. I bought a TRUGLO red dot for my MK3 Hunter and 10/22 just for fun. It's OK I guess, but I do just as well just snap shooting.

When I did basic at Ft Lewis in 69, the first rifle we got to shoot was a Red Rider BB Gun. It was called Quick Kill, that was fun for me as I was taught snap shooting (point and shoot) Next was an M14 with a piece of wood blocking the sights. That was all fun for me...:D

Not sure on the land navigation, but you are correct, it still should be taught. I have my old compass and current Nav maps. The only radio I remember is the Prick 25 (???) The only thing that it was good for was stopping bullets if you had it on your back.....

Land nav is for me a TON of fun. I loved teaching it to someone who just had a hard time with it. Really it comes down to the teacher IMO. I rocked land nav but water nav. for swimming was harder for me. I was always messing up my kick count in relation to the current. I never got good at it just good enough to pass the tests. You have strengths and weaknesses. that was a real weakness of mine.

I enjoy shooting. I have done some long range shooting but for me I enjoy close in work. Shotgun and SMG. Pistol as well. If I could have just one weapon for any role I would have a socom-16 Its a Springfield M1a .308 with a shorter barrel and its set up for a reflex type scout scope on the forward grip. I would have a red dot in addition to the iron sights.

Of course if I could pick just one SMG it would be the HK MP5 SND. 9mm with integral silencer, collapsible stock and full auto, 3 rd or semi. What a sweet weapon that thing is!

Pistol would be the sig p-220.

Shotgun would be the Mossberg M-590. Duckbill attachment.

If I had to carry a pig again I would quit. the M-60 sucks. I had such a worn out receiver it wouldn't keep its headspace. And the cotter pin holes were oval shaped from abuse. The entire grip assembly would fall off some times. Then you had to slam fire the weapon to shoot it. Bind the ammo belt and jam it to cease fire. What a heavy, crappy machine gun that was.

I got to carry a modified SAW. the FN/Hershel .223 lmg. it had to be kept spotless but it was a lot of fun. I hear the current ones run much better. We suffered a lot of jamming issues with the first ones. The thing was lightweight but it lacked the punch .308 has. I am a fan of heavy calibers. Penetration and shock kills from wounds. That's a bonus you cant get with a hot small caliber like .223

Hell, I treated the .50 like it was heavy arty in my time in the jungles. When we got to shield/storm and the combined arms were used. ... it was something to see real arty that was yours... and the air to ground was quite a show. I know flamethrowers are not allowed but we really could have used them in clearing the trenches we ran into. We used AT-4's and a LOT of grenades. I started with 20 stuffed into a claymore pouch. Ran out in the first 10 minutes.

just looked up and saw I had wrote a lot more than I intended. wow. sorry I got carried away there.

in 1988 the corps STILL used the PRC-25 ODG. That's how shitty our equipment was. Most of the stuff recon used was off the shelf. The only thing that was had was that burst transmitter/receiver. Most everything else was cast off Army issue or from the sporting good stores.

The Corps taught me to 'use what little I had to the best of my abilities'. It's still a good credo and one that's served me well in life.

I was a grunt so the more gear you have the more you have to carry. Only the essentials; gun, ammo, water, compass, a bit of food.

I can still hit the black with iron sights on an M-14 at 500M. A good skill that I learned, too bad I can't use it for anything. Scopes are nice, but don't drop it.

Red, God, I loved the pig....I was the skinniest guy in my squad so when they gave me the 60...i had to fight harder just to carry the mother around..lol...i cant count the times (before I got use to carrying her) that i nosed dived the barrel into the ground....good times..the pig made me who i am..The grunt behind the trigger can never be replaced because robots will never have balls.
