I actually like Halloween, though not in the commercial sence that most know today. I look at it in the old way's, and what the real reason for Halloween is.
I have to put a sign on the door, saying "No Trick or Treat'ers Please", as hubby chucks a fit at them knocking on the door all the time. But then again he can chuck a fit at anyone knocking unexpectedly. We have to sit in the back with all the front lights off, and curtains shut. Until it has all passed and gone quiet.
Fireworks, you're kidding. Here in Quebec city and suburbs, it's become a ritual, if the house is decorated outside and the lights are on, that means there are treats. This seems to work. I've seen one house where the owner put a sign saying that it was against his religion and didn't see anyone approching them.
I dont like the concept of trick or treating at all I mean you spend all year tellg kids that they should be wary of stranger danger and then tell them its ok to go out and knock on doors accepting sweets.....mixed messages.
I absolutely agree with this...this is what I say also. Also I don't like it because of religious reasons. I don't think it's cool that we let our children dress up as the Devil, Ghosts. Witches and chain saw mass murders etc...
My family also shuts off all the lights until in so over.
I dislike Halloween. I used to do T or T but since my mom passed and I live alone, I stopped. Halloween was my mom's favorite holiday and she was buried on Halloween.
I like Halloween a great deal, but I do not go out on Halloween night.....too many wild parties, young children, and mischief -makers running about for my taste. I prefer to stay home, stay warm, have a good dinner, honor my ancestors with a prayer and a candle, watch a movie, ...that kind of thing.
I HATE it! it is just another way for Hallmark et al to make more money and I resent that. If it was a bit more like the Mexican 'Day of the Dead' it would be OK. They use it to laugh in the face of death and at evil. Halloween is supposed to be the eve of all hallows (all saints), a time of remembrance but I think Christianity placed All Hallows over an original pagan festival and that's why everything has got so confusing. Same as Christmas, they should have put their religious festivals at a different time and not use them to convert pagans to Christianity. All that has happened is that the 2 festivals have merged into one and it is no longer pagan or christian - just confusing.
Family gatherings occur at this time but never for me so I feel very isolated at such times.:(
Oh man I LOVE Halloween, all the cutie pies that come to the house, it's without words how cool they look each year! We have TONS of them! The weather is usually nice and we have our pups dressed up, Rudy just loves to show up, and it's more like we get to do a bit of neighborly socializing.
I don't heap on the candy, I add stickers and pencils, erasers, while the kids get to pretend to be their favorite characters (I use to love that!) and the parents have a chance to see their kids giggle with their friends, like they use to. My husband's Nephew and family drop by with the kids and join in and each year we see how much they've grown. It's all "old school" around here and I enjoy it after having lived "in the city" for way too many years.
It doesn't last very long and we turn out the lights. I understand why people may not like it but my experience is all part of why I love this time of year :D
I guess it's just not as big a deal in the UK. Just around the corner (5th November) we have Bonfire (or Guy Fawkes) Night. This celebrates the capture and execution of a terrorist who tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament in order to assassinate King James 1 (The Gunpowder Plot).
It is traditional for us to celebrate with a big bonfire, fireworks, a 'Penny for the Guy' where kids make an adult size scarecrow version of Guy and go around getting money from people. There is Bonfire Toffee (treacle Toffee), baked potatoes, hotpot, roast chestnuts etc.
In essence, we remember never to let terrorists stop us or keep us down.
