Happy Memories

When I was about 6 I was swinging on our swing set when I decided to sing. It was in the middle of the summer, but the only song I knew by heart (just the chorus) was Jingle Bells. So I starting singing it at the top of my lungs. After maybe 5 minutes of this, a neighbor yelled out the window, "Shut up!!!" I just kept on singing until I finally got tired. LOL... (I am betting that neighbor was cussing by that time, but what they heck, you gotta sing when you are happy, right?).

I hum and also sing songs in my mind now sometimes, though for some reason I don't often sing out loud. I will have to change that!

Sometimes a place is full of happy memories. Such was a place we called Second Falls. It had two waterfalls and a huge pond below them with turtles in it. Then there was a stream that was the outlet. It had crawfish (we pronounced this crayfish) in it and we used to play with them. One day I caught one and took it home and placed it in my fish tank. It lived a good long time! It was so much fun to watch.

Sometimes, even when life is at its toughest, there is a happy memory tucked into it. Case in point:

When I was homeless and my hubby was in the nursing home, I used to go visit him as often as I could. I would spend hours outside begging for money so I could afford a motel room for the night. So many folks would give me dollar bills that I would be able to afford a cheap motel, take a shower, get some sleep and get up the next day to do it all over again (for 3 years!). Anyway, when I could get to see hubby, he'd get this little twinkle in his eye and say, "So how's business?" He'd make me laugh! Gosh I miss him so, but I know he needed to go home to Heaven to be with God, so I am happy for him none the less.

Man the things I remember at the most random of times. Thought I'd return to this thread, because I remembered a memory that was hilarious, and thought I'd share it with everyone.

So in the third grade, we read "The Witches" by Roald Dahl. It was about witches that turned children into mice. They were all bald but wore wigs to disguise themselves. Anyway, one guy told me that our principal was a witch and wore a wig. I of course passed it on to everyone else and they agreed with me. I even told the teacher. The teacher yelled from her desk waving at the boy to let him know "C! That's not a wig! That's her real hair." from across the room. It was so funny.

When I was a little girl, my dad used to have to work abroad a few times each year. He'd be gone for a few weeks and I'd miss him quite badly. But on the day he returned, he'd make sure he'd be at school to pick me up together with my mom. Those moments were so special, because my dad never got home before 5 on regular work days. I would storm up to him yelling "Daddyyyyyyyy!" and he would laugh, pick me up and hug me.

When we were kids we had Kool-Aid parties and one day when we were eating watermelon with our drinks, we found a baby bird. We fed it watermelon until its gullet was full. It had transluscent skin where the watermelon was, so we could see all the watermelon inside its little tummy! I only hope that it didn't get sick from eating all that watermelon!

My maternal grandparents loved me unconditionally. I remember what that felt like and try to remember now, that even though I don't feel that way particularly... that they believe/believe in me and in my ability to defy obstacles and difficult situations. It helps me to believe in me too... and makes me a bit happier when I pause to remember that.

I lived on an islet in the south when I was 8 -12 years old. There were woods and bogs to play in, and we found a treehouse in the woods. We decided it was ours, and loved to play there. It was so hot in the summer, but much cooler in the woods. There was also a swimming pool that we could walk to every day. Afterward we would get a Dr. Pepper and go sit on the docks. I loved it there.
